The blood in this film sprays out like a fire hydrant! Is this unique to Lady Snowblood or is it normal in 70s samurai films?

many films have this. You should also check out Takashi Miike's Ichi The Killer and Izo which take it to a whole other level.

I watched Kill Bill with my girlfriend Yumi (100% Japanese Visiting the US for school) she says that the Huge Blood spray goes back before movies and that it actually is from a kind of Samurai Play. Could you immagine Actors on stage having something spray blood like that? Crazy

The oldest massive blood spray I could think of is in Kurosawa's movie Sanjuro (1962).
