Characters sacrificed for the sake of plot

So far, I have only watched 2 chapters and am in the process of watching the third one. Right off the bat, I noticed the writers are trying to cram as much storyline as possible in this at the complete expense of characterization.

That being said, it is my only real complaint thus far. I do not understand why people are confused when watching it. The story is excellent to me and told in a vey stylish manner, but I hope the characters get better as I keep watching.
