reply

This movie was borderline terrible in my opinion and I'm black. It's just a matter of taste in movies not race.

Watts Up!!!

reply

I'm white but I grew up in the hood, and I think that this movie is a classic, but I'm the only white person that I know that has seen this movie. I think that your average white person can't really relate to what's going on in this movie, the language or the culture.

reply

I am black and I hate this film. It's nothing but a two-hour cliche about the 'hood. It stinks!

reply

tiffanykk2002,

Thank You. The last thing most people want to see is "another hood movie", especially if you came from an environment like that. It's old, played out...

Watts Up!!!

reply

this movie had nothing to do about the hood show me one time they where even living somewhere in the hood its a good movie your just righting it off because you think its like boyz n da hood

reply

the movie is flat out terrible. its a mix of biting off other movies and terrible acting.

the only good scene is the shoot out in the club.

i am mixed, my family is mixed. the movie is still terrible.

the first time i watched it all i could think was wow, they must have ran out of money so they couldn't shoot Nas in Africa, they just did the voice over.

reply

Black! loved the movie!! can't wait for the next part!

reply

It was so horrible I couldn't even finish it, and not because I'm white but because it's a bad movie.

Ok well I'm black and a fan of so-called "hood movies" and I didn't and still don't care for this movie! Horrible acting and imitation storyline!

I'm Black, born and raised in the South Bronx, and think this movie is a PIECE OF CRAP!

I just watched it with the "director's" commentary and couldn't keep myself from laughing. Hype didn't like the writing but HE wrote it. He didn't like some of the way it was shot but HE shot it. He also talked about how he had no understanding of how films are really made and how to deal with a movie studio. He's such a big fan of Scorcese but confused scenes from Godfellas with Casino.

He should stick to music videos with garishly lit strippers shaking their fat asses at the camera and leave film making to real directors. Hype is just that.

I'm black and I only like the Direction and Cinematography in this movie. I think Williams should get a professional screenwriter and professional actors and make his masterpiece.

Don't tell me what I can't do!

reply

Agree with everything written here. I'm also Black, but doesn't even matter. The cinematography was all I could talk about with my husband. Each scene was beautiful and distinct from the other. LOVED IT. As for the acting and the script....BOO! This film was a visual film for me, and that's it. I actually still have no idea what it was about!

reply

This movie was fried bootie nuggets for real...
I appreciate what they were going for I appreciate what they accomplished for 3 mil

But it's so over produced. Hype Williams was just that - Hype

There's no need to do all the obvious lighting effects and camera tricks EVERY SHOT.
It's like too much salt or too much treble or whatever. And it goes beyond the cinematography,
this movie is like one big silly fantasy of what a black man from the streets is supposed to want to believe.

It's like a dated 90's rap song turned into a movie. It portrayal of women as just walking deposits sitting around smoking in design night gowns until some hood n!gga comes does her right - That mess was just stupid. And why was they all greasy all the time.

I agree with others the movie would have benefited from having the two leads be actual actors.
DMX was just retarded at it and Nas was so monotone and boring to listen too...Like bad.

And overall the theme is so hamfisted! I appreciate the anti-violence message but it was so hokey.
If they had referenced any other religious belief instead of the now popular 5% Islamic talk that is so
popular in rap these days it would have been seriously ridiculed.

You can't have a film about redemption and spend and hour and twenty minutes glorifying violence and street crime, making it look cool and hip hopitty. You have the show the real consequences of said violence.

It just could have been so much better but doesn't feel cohesive due to the fact that it plays every card at the same velocity
Each shot is made to stand out and the end result is none of it does because of it. So it just feels like watching a sizzle reel for some music video directors job interview not a motion picture.

Black; Belly it has it's problems and some of the popular criticisms are warranted but it is still one of my favorite movies of all time due to sheer impact, cinematography, and authenticity.

I think Empire (2002) is a better movie and I'm not white nor black nor rican.

Black, born and raised in Miami (where they started filming The First 48); This movie (if that's what you wanna call it) is one of the absolute worst pieces of garbage I have ever seen. A plot all over the damn place, terrible acting and no character development. And of course the typical guns, drugs, illicit business and 500 million dollar mansion. This movie is on par with the Leprechaun series of movies- TERRIBLE.

I take it you are under the age of 16 and still have yet to venture outside of your parents home? Don't get a headache trying to fathom the simple question poised to you.

im a black woman (not that it matters but since people wanna bring up race). this movie came out when i was a teenager so all the kids were running to the movies to go see it. i liked it but not for its acting and played out story line. i LOVED the way the movie was shot. cinematography was the best thing about it IMO. even today the movie still looks great. the acting was just the typical NY hood lingo crap that still annoys me today but i can get past that because i really liked Nas and DMX at the time.
