You mean having people talk about the person or subject? Unless I'm unclear on what you are talking about, this is something almost every documentary would do.

I also thought of Reds (which I saw only last month), but I'm not sure that Sweet and Lowdown was copying its style. Both were imitating documentaries.

A similar documentary-style was used in Take the Money and Run, more than a decade before Reds, but it employed a narrator as well as talking-head interviews, much like Zelig did.
