I was wondering if Erik was in love with Ellen, but was jelous of the real love Olof and Ellen shared and he with his Elvis moves and a cute girlfirend couldn't love like Olof and Ellen could, and that ate him up inside. Thoughts?
Just saw the film, thought it was great.It was so peacefull to watch the pastoral landscapes in the lazy summer days of the 50's, great feel overall of a film.
Don't think Erik was in love with Ellen, but he was the local womaniser, with the big yankee car and the Elvis hairdo. He was, having travelled abroad, world wise and much more experienced with the girls than the bumbling , uneducated Olav, hence his jealousy that it was Olav who 'got the girl', so to speak.

He was using Olof and robbing him blind, and Ellen wanted to manage the household accounts closely, which would mean that Erik couldn't get away with it anymore.
And @David, I don't think any of Erik's boasts were true. I don't think we're meant to believe he has traveled and shaken hands with Elvis or anything like that. He's just a bigmouth.
I think there are several reasons behind Eriks behaviour. He felt superior to Olof and felt like she was a threat to loosing him.
But I don't think there were only bad reasons he probably had the noble reason of wanting to protect him as well, when he started speaking about that his friend was unexperienced with women...he knew that the woman had been around and she could easily break his friends heart.
The next wings you see will be the fly's buzzing over your rotting corpse.
