Far from the Madding Crowd (1998)

Thoroughly enjoyed this film. I didn't expect to, as I had really loved the 1967 version, but I got completely caught up in it. The only thing I missed was the repetition of Gabriel Oaks words to Bathsheba "When you look up, there I'll be ......" very sentimental but I did enjoy that! In a way I thought Bathsheba would have been modern enough NOT to marry Gabriel but just live with him, but then it was about 100 years ago.....

I enjoyed it as well, but honestly, she did not really seem to deserve the love of three men...well, two really, since Troy did not love her. She was foolish, vain and spoiled as well as childish, between her sending Gabriel away whenever she was frustrated and falling for Troy like a silly schoolgirl without looking into his past at all. I do not know why she garnered such respect. And she drove the poor older man mad. Too bad for him, she was not worth it.
