did her sister cheat with her husband? i'm trying to understand that scene in the restaurant

That was weird, wasn't it? You at first think the sister(?) [I missed some of the movie and didn't realize this woman was her sister!] is just upset because she never told that she knew about the affair, and then she seems to admit that SHE also slept with the husband, and she's scared her husband will find out. That was a strange twist and I couldn't figure out why it was there, except maybe to show the guy was even cheating on his mistress.

Although I enjoyed this film and consider it has been very much underrated, I too found the restaurant scene with Kay and the other woman baffling.

Please can someone explain exactly who this woman was and what it was about her which was revealed in the course of the conversation.

I think the woman's husband works at KST's husband's law firm; the two couples were obviously best friends, in any case.
The point was to get get KST fired up about the whole thing again, so that she could and would go back to the love nest. Also, it mirrors the whole plot: the message on the phone, KST screaming "why" in the car - the idea that love isn't sensible, and that there's no reason to be found for the whole affair, and HF isn't going to find one. He just has to learn to get over it.

It's there to facilitate the plot moving on, and to underscore the idea that there aren't any reasons for such behaviour, it's just hormones and chemistry and whatnot; "it was just stupid", the woman says, and that's kind of the whole point.

I don't think that was established. I think the OP just assumed.

I never thought it was her sister. A long time best friend that she had socialized with as couples for a very long time. There is nothing so low as people who cheat with spouses of "best friends". Unfortunately, in my observations, it seems to happen a LOT. Is it just plain jealousy? Or even worse, ENVY. One of the SEVEN DEADLY SINS.

The restaurant scene was how she finds out where the love nest is.
