Nothing happens in this movie! (Spoilers)

I've just sat down and watched two whole hours of nothing. What happens in this movie?! And what the hell does this movie want to be? I can admit its well made (Pollack rocks) and the acting is quite good, but the story is just a mess. Literally nothing happens in this movie. There is a little cop investigation, a political campaign and some 'detective' work on tha affair of their now dead lovers that leads to nothing! Does anyone agree with me that when the end credits start rolling, you think 'what just happened?'

Yes, me too. I could not agree with you more as I saw this movie in
the theater when it was first released and felt a huge let down
at the end. And I have watched it again on cable (it's on now on
TNT and I'm tuned into it)and with two fine leads and a very good
supporting cast I also did not like the ending as nothing seemed
to be resolved. Yes Dutch got promoted to lieutenant and
Katherine lost her bid for reelection and yet that big scene at
the end at the airport did not even tie up anything!'What just
happened exactly!'

Man, I feel sorry that you wasted 2 hours. I surely didn't.

It's about their lives and how the plane crash has affected them and how they would find strength by helping each other to come through it, he is a police officer and she is a politician, that's why you get a bit of investigation and politics going on. If he hadn't tried to "investigate" his wife's death:"

1. they wouldn't have gotten together, would they, which would have been the case if he was a guy working at Home Depo, and she was a teacher or something,

2. they wouldn't have known that they were cheated.

Couldn't agree with you more borislav. It was a real film about real people and a lot of people here don't seem to get that. They want excitement not real life.

I thought there was supposed to be some sort of mystery -- beyond the affair...so I was let down. It seemed soooooooooooo painfully slow paced.

Plenty happens in this movie, it just probably isn't what you were expecting it to be. I think part of the problem is that some people mistakenly believed Random Hearts was a thriller, and it wasn't. It was a romantic drama. Yes, it had a police subplot in it, but that was only to show how Harrison Ford's character was losing his grip in the wake of his wife's death. The same with the political story...it was supposed to show how Kristin Scott Thomas's character had even more to lose because of her husband's infidelity - even after his death. Random Hearts is a romantic drama about loss and grief, with elements of a mystery as the two main characters (particularly Ford's) try to piece together the puzzle of their dead spouses secret lives. Once you watch it as a romantic drama, then it is a very emotional and fulfilling film. If anything, my only real problem with it was that their relationship was left a bit vague at the very end.

It is a romantic drama and pretty much went that direction.

You were probably expecting a Terminator movie--also a romantic drama, but with rockem', sockem', action and dead bodies.

It's been a long time since you posted. I just watched this last night, though, so I guess it's relevant.

I don't really understand the mindset that *something* must happen for a movie to be interesting or exciting. I'm not suggesting this was a world class masterpiece, but isn't the purpose of movies just to entertain and not necessarily impart anything to the viewer? Is every single moment of every single day of life "eventful" and "meaningful"? I would argue that it's not and this never-ending demand that everything MUST be so is a huge contributor to our society's overall sense that something is wrong or unfulfilling.

So, two people meet by their shared experience of losing a loved one in a tragic accident. They have good days and not-so-good days. They try to pick up the pieces of their lives and figure out their futures in the wake of their respective losses. Okay...such is life. We do the best we can with what we have at the time and place where we are when unexpected events happen. Why does there have to be "something more" than that?

I don't totally agree, but I see your point.
This was a good plot, and the post-plane crash discoveries were a good hook. But the movie actually ended about an hour before it officially ended. It just kept going on, and on, and on. Just so Harrison could locate his wife's apartment love-nest? I'm glad Harrison Ford worked out his mental problems, but did we have to sit there for an extra hour and watch? I kept waiting for a surprise twist ending, after having to wade through another hour of talk. But it never came!
Also, what was going on with Kristen Thomas' eyes? Who uses red eye shadow? In every scene, she looked like she had been crying for 3 days. She's a good actress, but I didn't find her attractive in this movie at all, and the red-eye business just made it worse.
