i know shes known for her bad films however, ive enjoyed many, including shanghai surprise! this has got to be her worst movie ever. why after evita and her second chance at acting would she do this horrible film? baffles me.
I believe what you are referring to as diversity was more of cheap ploy to brings some content to a meaningless film.
Madonna had everything she could have wanted in the nineteen nighties with the exception of Julia Robert's film career. This film was an attempt to obtain that market share and she failed miserably
You must have flunked biology, because 42 is a perfectly fine age to be when one gets pregnant. In fact, it works within the context of this film because Abbie's clock is ticking, making the pregnancy all the more precious.
That said, this isn't a very good movie, and I feel bad for Madonna fans (I'm a fan!) who can't see that she is very weak in this...even watching soundless clips set to "Time Stood Still," an amazing ballad from the soundtrack that was wasted, you can see her stiffness, her blinking, her robotic movements. The film itself was also just a cynical bandwagon effort to capitalize on MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING and THE OBJECT OF HER AFFECTION. Madonna's BODY OF EVIDENCE was just a cheapo BASIC INSTINCT (already an abortion of a movie).
But people who say Madonna CAN'T act are overstating things. She was terrific in EVITA (probably missing an Oscar nomination by one or two rungs), DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, BLOODHOUNDS OF BROADWAY, DICK TRACY and DANGEROUS GAME, not to mention one of her finest cinematic turns, in A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN.
Unfortunately, her worst performances came in some very high-profile films, and in films over which she exerted way too much power, more than was commensurate with her skills in the medium: SHANGHAI SURPRISE, WHO'S THAT GIRL (she wasn't stiff, I'll give her that), THE NEXT BEST THING, SWEPT AWAY.
I've love for her to be good in a movie again, but I'm not sure what she'd look like on the big screen. She looks like an iconic star...I can't imagine her disappearing into a role whereas in the past it was hard but still possible.
Shortly after completing his final film, THE NEXT BEST THING, director John Schlesinger suffered a heart attack and underwent quadruple bypass surgery. During his recovery, he fired off a series of memos to studio exec Sherry Lansing, blaming his condition on his leading lady, Madonna, and her attempts to influence everything from musical score to the final cut. She demanded scenes be cut or rewritten and requested that computer imagery be used to beautify her in numerous scenes, which would've driven up the budget. He was even more incensed that star Rupert Everett and producer Tom Rosenberg were siding with her and giving in to her demands. Poor Schlesinger had a stroke around 2000 and was taken off life support in 2003. —Anonymous reply 159 Last Tuesday at 12:08 AM
