Oh's husband?

I saw this movie a half-dozen times before showing it to a friend. She deduced Oh's missing husband is the gas man because Oh started to cry when she heard his voice on the answering machine. I always thought she cried because it wasn't her husband but just a stranger, and that she wept because she was giving up any hope of hearing from him.

So, is the gas man her man or not?

There's another thread below that has some good observations about this question.

No more Mr. nice Gaius!

Yes.

reply

I say no...she's in tears because the only voice on the machine is the gas man. Not her husband saying "Oh I'm here." or "I'll come get you."

Doesn't Patrick go on to say that the voice on the machine sounds like a nice man, implying that it is her husband's voice? Then soon after she tries calling him again and then it cuts to the gas man dead on the floor.

It is her husband who truly loved her.
He waited for her at the table.
He ate strawberry ice cream while waiting for her,
she told Patrick that it is her favorite food.

She cried on the answering machine and played it all over again cause it was her husband from the gas company. she just wanted to hear his voice.

Oh, the ice cream! I hadn't made that connection.

Recently relented and bought the DVD (even though it's fullscreen - wtf?) because my mate loves the Last Night song ("I didn't get to sleep at all")...so this movie has been refreshed in my mind...My fave part remains the end, with the countdown and Guantanamera...such a perfect ending, although people I know were like, at the end, "that's it?"...Like, oh no, not an over-the-top special effects orgy, therefore it sucks...It's a perfect ending, if you ask me.

Didn't she go home once? Wouldn't she have seen his body?

THINK MCFLY THINK! Dear me, of course she didn't go home "once", that was the whole reason why she returned to Patrick's house, because she couldn't make it to her husband and didn't want to die alone. Were you even watching the same film as the rest of us????
The gasman was obviously her husband, that was the whole point of her replaying the answer machine message, and Patrick saying how decent and kind he sounded. It's not that difficult!

Hmm, another thing that tipped me off that the gas guy WAS her husband was the fact he was eating strawberry icecream direct from the container... just as Oh said she liked to do.

I never realy made that connection! I did remember her saying she liked strawberry ice cream directly from the tub, and he ended up doing that... What doesn't make sense to me is how a man with a pregnant wife(even if he wouln't know it) would spend his last few hours sending endless people 'Thank You' calls instead of sharing his time with her. I think her little friend there would have said that the guy sounded nice simply because he wasn't just trying to jam up the answering machine. He also said something about the answering machine being full, and that her husband still could have called, but the machine was just full.

reply

I am pretty sure it is him. I mean she cried over the message. The one guy commented on how nice he sounded. If you notice when the gas man is in his car he tries to use his cell phone. Also when the gas man is at home he is eating strawberry ice cream just like Oh said she wanted. The gas man also gets shot like Oh and him planned to do.

There was the ice cream which tipped us off, but also at the beginning she says she's tried to reach the car phone, but cell phones weren't working. Then it cuts to him in the car complaining how the phone isn't working. I figures he was her husband in the first fifteen minutes.

What a waste. Oh, the humanity!

reply

I'm pretty sure it was her husband - another indicator is that she mentioned he said he would still be at work at some stage (at 8pm I *think*).. Not many people in general would be and the movie made a lot of the fact that he was.
