I was thinking....
it was a solar flare.
Like lesser flares had made it 'day' all the time, at the end the sun just sends out a super flare (or novas)

It was an unexpected nova event. Before exploding and blowing off layers of its surface and eventually becoming a brown dwarf, the sun will incrementally expand in size to reach out as far as mars, engulfing the planet earth. It will become brighter and brighter during this process and with so much light even the night on the planet earth would become just a moderate dusk.
It was just canadian movie magic that the sun expands to engulf the earth right at 12 midnight....which explains the daytime at the end of the movie.
