Many reviews say this takes place on December 31, 1999. Where is this date mentioned in the movie? Also, if it were December 31, wouldn't it be very cold in Toronto? And, why would the family pretend that it's Christmas (the final Christmas wouldn't have even been a week before this)?
Its not cold because the sun is exploding or giant object is reflecting the sun onto earth.
Your right about the Christmas though, why wouldnt they just have celebrated in the same manner a week before?
I think the movie was funded on the premise that it was a movie about the end of the millennium, and by the time the script got finished it waws just about the end of the world at midnite, and the emphasis on Dec. 31st, 1999 got lost, but was probably featured in hype and publicity work.
December 31, 1999, eh? A disaster really happened that day. I managed to flood my apartment and the neighbours below me.
