Did anyone catch the line about 'others' already having been 'taken'?

In a conversation between two characters, one comments upon others already taken or something like that as an opening to discuss suicide or being fizzled/fried. Anyhow, I got caught on the fact that some were already gone and then got even more distracted by the news playing in the background in another scene regarding the (terminal?) status of some other nations. Hard to hear over dialog but it seemed that eastern Europe had already checked out.

Anybody get more of those two aspects than me?:

Other individuals were "taken"... a euphemism for suicide or government sponsored suicide?

Different timelines of destruction for different nations?

If I can get hold of this movie, I hope to watch it again soon, and will look for all that. Thought-provoking movie, and I have the good fortune to not get all hung up on it not having "scientific plausibility, or realism," as so many seem to do.

Multiplex: 100+ shows a day, NONE worth watching. John Sayles' latest: NO distribution. SAD.
