I turned this steaming turd off after twenty minutes

I rented this thing on VHS back in the VHS days and it sucked royally. The addresses to camera, Stephen Dorff hitting a pause button on a remote control and then walking in front of the screen and giving his two cents and all the rest of the gimmicky crap, including a woeful cameo by Bono, man, this film is LAME. I lasted twenty minutes then turned it off to go fold my socks. I found that much more stimulating and a whole lot less embarrassing.

First I would like to say that 20 minutes makes you no expert on the film, and using evey slanderous cliche in the book doesn't make you a good poster or critic for that matter.

That being said:
There are, as you so eloquently put it, "turds" and there are films that deviate from accepted rules of cinema. There are many venues that allow for expression and I found that Dorf addressing the camera made it slightly more intimate and allowed for character development. After all what would typical be with-out non-typical. I feel sorry for your socks maybe they would have found the movie more stimulating than being folded.

I agree with you a 100%. Great stuff by Joanou and I hope he gets more and more movies to come in the future.

Cinematogrpahy of some of the buildings around the village in Manhattan was very good. Story was good enough for me to enjoy and even cimpare to my life in similar situations. Dourff talking directly into the camera helped this.

I agree with you.

This was a brilliant movie. I felt I could relate to Stephen Dorff's character Jake.

I enjoyed it.

I liked the film a lot but it definitely has some flaws... What might be worth noting is that the Bono/U2 cameos occur a lot further than 20 minutes in, so they gave the film more of a chance than they're indicating. I did chuckle at "back in the VHS Days," though...

I honestly didn't like when the cat started talking, that was a little much. Other than that, this is one of my top movies.

I laughed at the "turned this steaming turd off" bit. Laugh riot.

20 minutes? give it a chance man. It was probably one of my top 10 films of 99. The ending is what makes it worth while. Well that and Kelly Macdonald's role ^_^

Have to agree, this film was a POS. Self-indulgent and boring. Who gives a F about the characters? And yes, I watched the whole thing, against my better judgement.

As you say, you watched it for 20 mins. That is normally not even the length of setting the scene in the majority of movies. Soooo........ STFU? Yes? Right.

I caught this on TV tonight and it tickled a bone in me b/c, strangely enough, I was part of the NYC indy film scene in the late 90's. As I watch, I'm like, "wtf is this? - it reminds me of those days back in Tribeca..."

After watching... unfortunately I gotta agree with 'mikleos2' and some others. Shots look nice and all- but the movie is, IMHO, over the top self indulgent. It may very well chronicle this guys life, but there were too many scenes that tried to make us feel bad for this healthy, model-banging, awesome apartment-having, movie-directing, all the breaks getting, cat hallucinating individual. The feeling was kinda along the lines of, "it's really hard out there for a pimp". -yeah, right... we feel for you dude :).

Sure it's cute- for a short or something... but there's just not enough meat in this flick to keep interest for 2 hours.

Man who only watch 20 minutes of movie, is man who not even got into the meat of a movie, and as such can't really give a good review of it.

I thought it was a fantastic movie, I thought the 'gimmicky crap' was really good and well placed, I thought Bono was a Cameo but he's in it later and it makes sense, you're an idiot, even 2 years later.
