NOTHING GREAT, I REGRET TO SAY

I can't figure why some people are so enthused about this movie... I found it too talky and pretty damn boring. Someone said it had "emotion", well, I couldn't find it. All I saw was a lot of pretentious dialogue trying to seem deep. I guess a lot of people are fooled easily, because they're desperate for something different. But different doesn't mean good. Also, there was absolutely no sense of pacing. Just go back and watch some real films from the 70's or 60's--- the real stuff that this film wants to be like. By the end, I wanted to take a pen and cross out half the script. Don't know if EVEN THAT would've helped.

Don't you find it virtually scary when someone sees a movie like this, misses its heart and comes away bored and condemning? Really make you wonder what kinda trash they advocate-perhaps "Final Destination XI".....

yeah i agree. i saw this movie on the independent film channel because i watch every movie on that channel. i admit i have a problem with lack of negative capability, so i started judging from the beginning. i was about to turn it off but i couldnt. from the beginning the two characters grab you and you start to empathize them and identify with them. right after i saw it i felt like going to everyone with a *beep* job and saying "just so you know i really hate that people treat you like *beep* cause your not"

I call that the 'indie slow creep'. Ya know...a non descript movie comes on like IFC or Sundance...something you've never heard of before....you move to get the remote and change, but inexplicably you can't. You freeze, while the movie very slowly and surreptitiously escalates into something gut wrenching, heartfelt and worthwhile.

Ahhhhhh...nothing like the 'indie slow creep'......

take out the "yeah i agree" shoeihell, leave it purposely vague as to what movie you're talking about and that's a pretty... profound statement that should be quoted or something, and referenced./recognized.

Very well said.

wow snowman, you're an idiot. there are many mainstream movies i love, i am by no means an "indie snob", but this movie has quite superior writing if you actually pay attention. but then again, i'm sure it's hard when you're cable bill is past due and you can't watch that spice movie you were trying to order.

I have to disagree. The film is more of a literary piece, and paced like a book, not a film.
60's and 70's films were also reflections of their times, and heavily affected by society, Vietnam, and other social issues.
This film is clearly steeped in a blue collar world at the turn of this century, where 2 people come to understand things that they clearly do not understand, but come to realize; namely friendship.
I agree this is no fantastic film, but the two leads do a bang up job.
As far as desperate for something different; I am not sure this would be considered all that different. I am not sure why you think that this is why people liked the film.
Lastly, having something in common with the characters tends to be very important when it comes to liking a film of this nature. I feel like I knew these guys when I watched the film, and the two of them have always done a good job of playing characters people can relate to.
Pretentious? If this is pretentious then perhaps you are confusing that word with something else. This film is anything but pretentious. These guys were as on point as you can be with the characters they were playing, and the dialogue is quite real, and believable.

I still think it was boring and pretentious and far too long. It's not a good movie. I didn't relate to the characters at all, and they seemed to be acting. Films from the 60s and 70s were better made all around, and were interesting. Even if the story alone had some small merit, the movie does not have much merit at all, it's a total bore.

I loved it.

Having it set in Ridgefield Ct. was nice, since its only twenty minutes away.

The seasonal vignettes between scenes were very quaint, and helped set up the overall feel of the story.

As I have posted on other message boards for other movies, there is a 'deplorable excess of soulless people" out there... It is one thing to not like a movie, especially a good one, but to activly bash it takes an emptiness of soul and a vampiric need for negativity to flow through your' hole'. You must not only take in negativity, you are compelled by the great evil force of all the universe to vomit forth as much negative energy as your mortal coil will allow.

I pity you.
