piss poor casting

This is what happens when you cast three grown women that are pushing 30 to play high school students. Who the hell's idea was that?

Puh-leez. Rose McGowan looks like somebody's mother, not a student, and Julie Benz looks like a worn out crack whore.

It was Darren Stein's idea, he wanted it that way. Here's what he said on the inlay to the dvd:

Stein decided to cast actresses who were slighly older than the age they were portraying.

"these girls are all in their 20's and they're playing high school girls and that's the way i wanted it, because if you look at grease-Stockard Channing was at least 30 when she was in that-or if you look at Carrie-Sissy Spacek is slightly older than high-school age as well"

"You can beat me up, but don't touch my hair, I will kill you!"

reply

most movies and tv shows are cast that way. look at the oc (no i don't watch it but i've seen adds stc.) the kids are 25 and the parents are 35

rose mcgowan was 24, so how does that make her 'pushing thirty'???

Lets do some simple math.

*Jawbreaker - released 1999*

Rose Mcgowan - born 1973

1999 - 1973 = 26 years old

Rebecca Gayheart - born 1971

1999 - 1971 = 28 years old

Julie Benz - born 1972

1999 - 1972 = 27 years old.

Man I can't believe Rebecca Gayheart was 28 in this thing, she looked by far the youngest to me! Some folks are just lucky to be ageless. :-)

Let's do more math!

This film = Released in January 1999.

Rose McGowan = Born Septemper 1973.

...Filming more than likely took place in the summer of 1998 so that there would be at least 6 months for Post-Production and promotion for the movie.

Rose was probably about 24 when filming the movie, 25 tops if the movie was filmed after September 98', which is unlikely.

Same goes for the other girls.

Rebecca was probably around 26, 27 tops!

Julie was probably 26.

You always have to remember that movies are filmed months, sometimes even years before they are publicly released!

My problem was Fern/Vilette. She was still ugly after the makeover. Judy Greer is not pretty, and not only could I not suspend disbelief that no one recognized her as Fern, but that the whole school would worship Vilette in the same way they did the truly gorgeous Rose McGowan, Julie Benz and Rebecca Gayheart. Didn't buy it, even though Vilette had the attitude. Maybe it's just me. Anyone think Judy Greer is beautiful?

reply

Don't care about the age-issue but man this flick could have done with like one more totally hot chick. Like I would have liked to have seen Denise Richards in the cast or maybe like something weird like Fiona Apple. That would have been cool.

reply

Actually Rachael, Rose was like 26, but nice try. Don't forget to go to math class ok? I can't believe you mentioned the piss poor casting OP without stating that Gayheart simply can't act, at all!! That aspect was even worse than their ages in my view. I can't say that Rose looks like someones Mother either. That's pushing it a bit, she could easily pass for early 20's in this film I'd say. I guess she could be a young Mom sure, but she is nowhere near MILF status yet.

My body's a cage, it's been used and abused...and I...LIKE IT!!

Rose McGowan had the cute image that made her look believable as a teenager.
Rebecca Gayheart was the only one that looked older imo.

I thought that, for once, the girls actually looked like teenagers.
The worst example of an older actor playing a teen was Jeb Stuart Adams, who played Chris Dollanganger in "Flowers in the Attic". He was supposed to be 16 or so...he was 26!
He looked even older than that.

This is my first memory of Judy Greer. I saw this movie in 2000, and have followed her career since. So yeah, I think she is dropped dead gorgeous not to mention incredibly talented and versatile. I'd choose her over Rose, Rebecca, or Julie, then and now. I think she passed for high school, she would have been 24 or so when the film was released, so on the younger side. Some high schoolers just do not look young.
