Underrated

This movie is underrated. It came out way before Mean Girls, and compared to that movie, Jawbreaker is totally underrated.

Jawbreaker is rated pretty badly, a 4.7 at the moment. However it's still harshly OVERRATED!! This film is a total piece of crap. Thank God for Rose McGowan and a few good songs, because that's absolutely all this film has going for it. Among the amazing amount of low points this film has, is the fact that Rebecca Gayheart may just be the worst actress on the entire planet. I gave this film a 3 out of 10, and honestly felt I was being extremely generous. Jawbreaker, nor Mean Girls are original for their time. Don't kid yourself! Both Mean Girls and Jawbreaker take their influence from the 1980's classic dark teen film 'Heathers', which I'm quite sure is probably rated better than both this and Mean Girls, even though it's much older. The idea was probably even attempted long before Heathers, however Heathers is clearly the best of these dark teen flicks that revolve around the social politics of females in a high school setting. Personally I don't think any of the three films are great, but Heathers is definitely more intelligent and ahead of its time than the other two. With Jawbreaker clearly being by far the worst of the three. All this of course, 'in my opinion'. You are certainly entitled to yours.

No way this flick rules!

Rebecca Gayheart was tottally believable and stuff and plus I think she is cute so am going to defend her.

Also Jawbreaker has a really unique '80s style (lots of bright colors and stuff, plus school was named 'Reagan High') mixed in with late '90s style ('90s Goths all over the place) for a real unique mixed vibrational that someone that lived through those two decades can appreciate as total coolness.

Why insult yourself? I'm not saying Gayheart is ugly, she certainly isn't. Bottom line however is that she can't act worth a shyt, and this movie sucks. That's why it's rated in the 4's. I will agree that there is nothing wrong with the look of the film. I'll give you 2 points for that part of your post, but since you think Gayheart can act, I'll have to give your post a minus 5 overall. Oh yeah, and you said "this flick rules", which makes your post a minus 10 right there. Ok, thanks for coming. :)

After some consideration, I've actually decided to give your post a plus 1. Simply because you really made me laugh and proved a point when you said Gayheart was, "Tottally believable and stuff". Lol! Nice! And stuff, lol.

Well am certainly glad that you saw the logic in giving the flick some points for its production values ('80s and '90s style) It is good to reach a modicum of common ground and like not harsh ones mellow. It is totally A-OK to be totally like shallow and just like the look of a flick on just that basis alone and stuff.

For a more High Brow example of this I certainly like Kubricks 'Eyes Wide Shut'. Man the thing just looks great, but sadly just about everything else is wrong with it.

reply

Let me make it perfectly clear to you. I don't like this film. Your brain obviously doesn't have the capacity to understand a film like Eyes Wide Shut. Stick to dumb unoriginal films rated in the 4's, like this one.

I don't understand what is so wrong with this movie. Academy Award winning? No. Oscar winning? No. I kind of like the cheesy factor of the movie. I'm not a movie elist, but I recognize this movie is not perfect. Nonetheless, did I enjoy it? Yes...

I like a few things in the film myself. Not very much of it, but some. McGowan gives a very solid performance for instance, at least in my view. However I certainly don't have a problem with people who do happen to like the film. I'm sure it appeals to certain peoples tastes. Can't say I hold the Academy Awards with high reguard, so I don't give a crap about that. I was only slagging on fanboi there because he started being a clown toward me. Certainly nothing wrong with having different opinions on film, etc. We'd all probably be pretty damn bored in this world if we all had the same thoughts about everything.

I think it was released at the wrong time, all the simple minded movie goers were into gross out slapstick comedy, like American Pie & Scary Movie back then, it was the wrong kind of humor. If it was released a few years ago with a different cast, it probably would've been better recieved.

I bought the dvd first day it came out though and it's still in my collection.

The characters in this film neither looked or acted like teenagers. Especially, the leads, they looked circa 25 to 30. Which, I believe was their chronological ages in real life.
This film was good for a couple of viewings, it looses its appeal every viewing from then.

Heathers was much better and I own it on DVD...I'd only buy this film if it was on sale in a Walmart bin for cheap.

I love this film. It is in 'my guilty pleasure' file. I especially enjoyed the sound track. I believe this movie was supposed to be over the top.

Couldn't agree more! Has a similar plot to Mean Girls but I find the dark comedy of Jawbreaker more entertaining. Also the 90s nostalgia and soundtrack gives it the edge for me. My sister and I watch this film every couple of years, I can't believe how few people have seen or heard of it.

reply

Yes I love this movie so freakin much! I think it's fantastic and it's one of my favourite teen movies and I think it is a shame that this movie does not get the same amount of attention that Mean girls & Heathers gets because I love this movie more than those two films.

MEAN GIRLS: 8/10
JAWBREAKER: 4/10

I agree. Jawbreaker is the forgotten/black sheep movie of the infamous "mean girls" set of films Heathers/Clueless/Mean Girls. It frankly has a B-movie feel about it, which is perhaps why it's not as popular. But I found it rather fun.

Agreed. I love this movie and think it's a fantastic 90s movie. People say the acting is bad and it's over the op and this and that--- dude--- it's a dark comedy and it's supposed to be over the top. Actually compared to a lot of teen/high school movies NOW, the acting in this is really, really good. Not academy award A-list good---but its far from bad and even far from just decent. Rose McGowan's acting (even if it was the most over the top) was actually the best acting in the film. She's a great actress in general. She was the most fascinating, watchable character. People can't look at every film and have "rules"----if this movie was a play, noone would say it was overacted at all. This film is SUPPOSED to be campy, silly, dark comedy, over the top in every way. The color of their clothes, the brightness of most of the scenes, eveything was supposed to be colorful and pretty, and the characters are supposed to be just as stand out and bright as the colors. When I think of the entire movie as a whole---it reminds me of candy. That was the theme. Not just because of the name but because of the outfits, scenery, makeup, all of it.

I cannot believe people can't be open minded enough to see past the intended campiness of it all. And that's what makes it great. If they took this more seriously, and toned everything down, it would have been just another "mean girls" movie with nothing but the plot and average acting. This stands out and always will. I miss 90's films because they weren't afraid to "go there"

The whole thing was artsy as well without being pretentious about it. Just funny artsy. Like the whole makeover scene with Fern. That was so over the top and funny and ridiculous, but really interesting.

Also the soundtrack rocks. It wasn't just top 40 pop music. It had a rock and roll feel to it, and also some 80's, 70's vibes with the colors and clothing and houses. Movies these days can take themselves way to seriously and it ends up bad. Id rather see Rose McGowan over act in a film like this and do a great job and be incredibly interesting to watch-----than to watch a movie like Mean girls (which I did enjoy) but honestly it never gripped me like this one did. Mean girls was funny....and also over the top and campy. But Jawbreaker to me, is far more interesting overall. Some people just don't get that overacting can be good acting. And underacting can be CRAP. Like Kristen Stewart and her monotone crap. And many many other actors I can think of today who take it too seriously, and don't just go there with it. Not that every movie should be campy, but every movie doesn't have to "make sense" in some weird "rule book of movies" way.
