So, Julie and Fern would be totally screwed as well....

After watching this again for the first time in years, I sorta realized that Julie and Fern would also be screwed right along with Marcy and Courtney.

If Julie had found the photo she was looking for, it still would have been her word against Courtney's. So, I don't know why she and Zach thought that would clear anything up. In fact, it would look worse on her end since she'd have been the one to bring the photo to the police, and they'd have definitely questioned why she had it and Courtney didn't.

And, yeah, they had the recording of Courtney admitting to the accident, but it would still be her word against Julie's. If Julie is willing to admit her part in the whole thing to ease her conscience (which is evident when Julie is looking for the photo... Zach tells her she has to tell someone because it's the right thing to do, she agrees) then she'd still have to admit her part when the truth came out via the recording of Courtney.

Fern lied for a makeover, and that would be bound to come out...

So, yeah, they'd all be screwed.

I don't really get why Julie and Zach seem so pleased, like their relationship will be wonderful, and they'll get to be together forever now. It's going to be a little difficult to maintain a relationship when Julie is behind bars.

Julie could also argue that she met with Detective Cruz to tell her everything that she knew, but detective Cruz cut her short to explain that they already had a suspect in custody. Courtney was a bully and the girls were scared, if anything Fern and Julie would've probably gotten a brief suspended sentence with community service, and their records wiped clean since they were under 18. My concern was always how Liz Purr's parents would react when they found out their daughter's best friends had accidentally killed her and hid information.

Julie with Zach tried to reason with Vera, she didn't listen to them.

In court, the crimes committed would be "wrongful death/manslaughter". Obscuring Justice, False Arrest (Manson's character), mishandling a corpse, conspiracy, planting and tampering evidence and "duty to rescue".

Julie was trying to prove the truth the entire movie, I'm pretty sure that the DA would sympathize with that. Marcie would probably get slapped with accessory to murder and conspiracy. So would Fern to be honest. She knew she was doing wrong and there's no way a DA would drop charges because the "makeover" clouded her judgment.

Of course this is all speculation, had they done a sequel it would be pointless, but it does make for an interesting discussion as to who would have been punished for what.

The highest penalty would be Murder II, but that likely wouldn't stick because of a plea bargain and it could be argued that no one had the intention (mens rea) or meant to (actus rea) kill Liz.

What's would likely happen is Julie, Fern and Marie would keep their mouths shut about their part. Claim they know nothing and let Courtney take the whole fall.

Courtney will claim Julie and Macie were part of the abduction with her. That Fern cam in and saw the body. They will deny it. Or she or her lawyer will decide that talking at all will not help her case, it will look like she's trying to deflect blame. They'll claim the card was about something else since it's a year old.

Fern will say she knew nothing about this. She just dropped off Liz's homework on the porch and left when no one opened the door.

Julie will say the first she found out about this was when she opened the card Liz's mother delivered to her house. She decided to announce it at the prom because she was so outraged at finding out about Courtney killing Liz.

The cops will know someone else was there because Courtney was talking to them but will be unable to determine how. They will suspect it was Marcie.

If they find the picture at the parking lot, it might have Marcie's finger prints on it. That will tie her in. But they have to find it and that's a long shot. If they do, Marcie will say she knows nothing about it, that she loaned the camera to Courtney.

They can't deny not knowing about it when they were the ones who clearly set her up. We would have to assume that she incriminated herself with the birthday card.

Julie would be fine since how she blew the whistle on the whole operation especially one that the cops had no idea about and also because she saved an innocent person from going down. I imagine Marcy and Fern etc would plead guilty for lesser jail time.

I didn't take the ages into this so I imagine Marcy and Fern may go to woman's juvenile until 21 and then that would be it while Courtney would be sentenced at 21.
