Who was the father of Ilona'a child

Andras? Probably not as he died to early.

Hans? And that one reason that Ilona killed him?

Lazlo?

reply

The child was Lazlo's =)

How can any of you on this site be sure as the last man she had relations with was the NAZI.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

reply

Yes...but she could have gotten pregnant with Lazlo before she slept with the Nazi.

reply

All this conjecture is fun, but ultimately only the screenwriter knows for certain and he ain't talkin.

reply

Yeah, that's true. Either way, it is a great movie...but so sad.

reply

Max Bygraves wants in on the sequel.

reply

It may be Wieck, as the son looks like him.
Ilona had his son but killed him with his son.
It is curious. Is there anyone who has read the novel?

reply

I think it's not important in the movie but he looks like Lazlo more than other two guys

reply

I was wondering the same thing. I think it was Lazlo's reason being, he did look most like Lazlo and also she killed him with her own son as to avenge his fathers death by the hands of this man.

my 2 cents

reply

Yes i was wondering this.I suppose maybe he is that german offical Hans' son. After all he was the last man who had her body. And to be revenged by the woman he deceived and his own son,how ironic.

we don't know. she had sex with all three of them. it could have been anyone of them. her son was lighter hair so could have been Hans. I think it is Hans and he kills his own father without knowing that he's his father.

reply

I think and hope that it's Lazlo's child.

I think the son was Lazlo's because, in the last bath she was taking, she said to Lazlo, words to the effect, that she wanted to take all of her baths there, i.e., she wanted to marry him or be with him forever. I think she KNEW she was pregnant then. She hadn't been raped by Hans yet. Recall that Lazlo didn't react to the comment but simply got dressed and went to the restaurant, maybe because he knew how uncertain life was at that point.

Lovely story. Just got through watching and I am very moved.

I am fascinated by the Hungarian culture; what a dramatic situation for Hungarians, Jews and non-Jews, before, during and after the war.

You may be right, but this is not the important issue. Hans had to pay for his duplicity and actions. He used his power to get rich and finance his future company and she understood when she probably saw him coming in the restaurant at the beginning of the movie so she planned carefully the moment she would murder him during the diner.
This movie touches me very much as my grand parents on my father's side were both murdered by the Nazis at the end of the war in Budapest.

This discussion turned out to be a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. I agree, it doesn't really matter who the father was but for the sake of dramatic irony. But still that makes it interesting.

Here's my take. He was the son of Hans (the Nazi). As others pointed out, Hans was the last man to have sex with Ilona. And I would go further to say (getting a little graphic here, so hide the kiddies) since Hans raped her, he most likely didn't bother to pull out or take any precautions that her serious lovers would have taken to avoid getting her pregnant. His "relations" with her were rough, forceful and invasive.

So, just in terms of dramatic irony, I would say the son belonged to the Nazi who impregnated Ilona by force. It is then poetic justice that the son, conceived so violently like that, would later become the instrument that assists his mother in getting her violent revenge. The son also did look a bit like Hans with his sharp features, and I think he even had a slight gap in his teeth like Hans, something that Lazlo didn't have.

Did she kill Hans? I thought it was a heart attack?

reply

I think it's Laszlo or Andras as there is a scene where Llona throws up, very subtle but I interpreted that she was pregnant and that was before Hans.
