Goes to prison?

I know he leaves the country at the end...but if he would have stayed:

He basically returned the painting 2 days after stealing it...but never the less, he stole it. Will he go to jail? Getting nailed for the painting theft means not able to come back to the states forever if he runs out.

Also, Almost at the end he tells Catherine that if he returns the painting everything will be forgiven...why he thinks that?

Also, if he thinks that and then steals another painting (only to return it to Catherine) he is only making it worse right?

Valid points, but I think he was more concerned with winning over Catherine. Stealing the painting for her, even though she didn't want to keep it, was a way of showing his love.

Also, one could imagine that a man of his stature with ruthless lawyers who loves art could work a deal out with the museum where maybe he gives them a sizable donation in lieu of them pressing charges. That is in no way implied in the movie, but my own personal opinion.
