I'd say he's a loner, but lives a fascinating life which he loves to make for himself. It's even better for him when he meets someone, like Catherine. When that happens he holds on. Then he's not a loner, and his life is even more interresting.

Watch his chat with his therapist again. She talks about 42 year old, self involved loners and says something like if you think you can make it work with a mirror image...

and he adds, "Think again?"
