Why 'Junky'?

Can anyone explain why the title uses the spelling "Junky" instead of "Junkie"? I didn't catch a reference to it in the film. Really, it's a horrible title anyway, and I'm not sure "Junkie" would have helped because the lead character isn't on drugs or addicted to anything – just drifting. Decent film, though.
