Ending

I'm a bit confused, was that his eternal punishment or did his child go to Heaven?

I just saw this today. Not bad, but I liked Kwaidan better.

As for the ending, I would say it's safe to assume that the dude saved the baby. Not that they show you that (he's just rolling around babbling), but the last shot of the film is the two ladies smiling. They wouldn't be so happy in a place like hell unless the guy saved the baby, right?

I thought so, it was such an abrupt transition.

I always thought he failed to save the baby, since the frame freezes with him on the opposite side of the wheel, along with sad music. Also, the scene of heaven, if that's indeed what it represents, feels a bit melancholy.

I was coming here just exactly to ask what happened at the end as well... However, I can tell you with certainty that the girlfriend and the sister are standing before the Japanese representation of Heaven. Toshiro Mifune's Yamato Takeru ascends to an almost exact looking effect at the end of "The Three Treasures".

What I was wondering was did Shimizu get to go to Heaven or not. I didn't notice if either of the two women were holding the baby. Just calling out his name.

I was confused with the ending too. But I think you guys cleared it up for me.
