is it worth it?

i know that criterion releases great movies on dvd and we know for a fact that september will be a great month on dvd because of the other dvds that will arrive almost at that same time................................

such as the 3 disc seven samurai {1954}, legacy edition double indemnity {1944}, gojira {1954} by classic media, 2 disc playtime {1967}, 2 disc amarcord {1975}, single disc brazil {1985} [i dont have the criterion 3 disc], and a few weeks earlier-seduced and abandoned {1964}, also from criterion.
do I need to buy this one along with the others, because it is as great as the other ones?

Jigoku is a favorite of mine for its ethereal visuals and bleak tone. I wouldn't know how to compare it to all those other releases because they're just so completely different from each other. But if you like artfully directed films and can appreciate the tragic subject matter, then Jigoku is a must.

A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.

Yeah Jigoku is defiantly worth it, it is one of Criterion's cheaper releases so I would say go ahead and buy it.

This movie is fantastic. See it.

Yeah and the doppelganger character is pretty cool too. Interesting flick, somewhat harsh visuals for the time period near the end of the film.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I found Jigoku to be over-the-top, hammy, campy, and pointless. I can't speak for Gojira, but this film is less than third-rate in comparison to the other movies you have listed from Criterion.

To be sure, Jigoku held promise, but the last half-hour is all cheap screams and maudlin music, like the Haunted House at Disneyland. Sorry, that's just my opinion.

I liked it, I thought it was just right did have a point and I found the movie impressive in the FX department, beautifully directed movie.

I have the luck of attending a university that has a ton of these Criterion released DVDS so have to say I wasn't disappointed. I'd rent it first if you can and if you like it buy it.

it's a great film, but NO film is worth criterion's insane price jacking.

I'm just curious, asking sincerely: At the rates you can rent a film these days, and with interlibrary loan systems, etc., what would _ever_ be the purpose of buying a film like this on DVD unless there were no other way to get it? Let's say you plan on watching this film five to seven times in your lifetime, which is a helluva lot considering 1) the volume of great films out there that you need to see, and 2) the average lifespan of a human being once he/she has developed enough sense to want to see a good number of them. Most of the places I've ever lived, you can rent a film like this for a buck or two. In fact, right now the local vid store with the best foreign collection has its non-new releases for two bucks a vid, but if you bring it back the day after you rented it they knock off a buck-fifty-one, so you end up getting it for 49 cents plus tax. Even if it were the full two bucks, I could watch it seven times for 14 bucks, which brings me back to the question: Why do people pay twenty or thirty dollars for a film they can rent again and again and never come close to the sale price? Maybe it's just luxury or convenience. I'm just asking.

Because the gap between sale price and viewing price becomes even greater when you're talking about zero dollars for viewing, this question becomes even more important considering the growing collection of DVDs at so many libraries. Even where I live--a mid-sized city of a quarter million, but isolated from other, larger communities both geographically and culturally--it's pretty amazing how many good films you can get either on the library shelves or through ILL.

Also: Yeah, I know you can get them used, and sometimes they're worth it. But still...if it costs $8 for a good used DVD, I'd better be damn sure I'm gonna watch that film at least four to eight more times, or I'm just throwing money away. How many films are really worth that kind of repeat after repeat, when they're competing for time with other good films you haven't seen?

And before anybody calls me a film Philistine or whatever it's gonna be, I've worked as a film critic before, was a film student, have presented at conferences on film, etc., etc. It's a serious question from a serious student and fan of film in general.

reply

Definitely agree. My film "collection" includes the Denver Public Library's thousands of DVDs, also Netflix streaming and Hulu Plus, which includes the Criterion collection on demand. Why buy?

"SEDAGIVE?"

Exactly. Kinda cool, ain't it?

NetFlix got this movie to me in one day.

I liked this movie but it clearly is mislabled as a "J-horror" film when it is, in fact, a fantasy.

This movie is so over-the-top and melodramatic that I found myself laughing out loud numerous times. It is highly entertaining and stylish. Unique.
