Cool cool. I actually just picked up Teruo Ishii's remake, so I'll add a review for that the coming weeks.

So how was the remake? Seems audacious -- I mean the thought of it does -- but the truth is that a technically updated version might be effective. Or maybe not. I wonder whether, with some of these Japanese films that are in highly formalized and artificialized structures, the fact that they don't go for seamless visual verisimilitude (the few that do tend not to achieve it even partially because of the technical limitations of the time, obviously) is part of the creepy thing that gets under your skin and in your brain. Think about the weird artifice of something like Onibaba, for instance.
