Movies like 'Following'?

I'm looking for movies like "Following" or "Pi": good, low budget (debut?) films, probably black and white, that kind of thing.

Does anyone know movies like that?

I suppose it depends on your definition of "good" and even what defines "low budget". Here are some debut's from some popular directors that come to my mind. All have their "charm". [Though only Citizen Cane, Maltese Falcon, and Clerks are in Black/white]

Some of the excellent ones are:
One of the (if not THE) greatest films of all time (Orson Welles's Citizen Cane http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033467/) is a black and white debut film [Though is $700,000 in 1941 considered "low budget"?)

John Huston's Maltese Falcon http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033870/, Quentin Tarantino Reservoir Dogshttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105236/ and the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086979/

Some very good debuts
Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104815/ ($7,000 Budget!), Kevin Smith's Clerks http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109445/ or George Lucas' THX 1138 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066434/

Some are more "campy":
If you like horror: Sam Raimi's Evil Dead http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083907/

Car chase flick: Ron Howard's Grand Theft Auto http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076100/

It may just be me talking, but I found 'Following' to be a bit similar to the 1992 French film Man Bites Dog: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103905/

reply

might not be similar but I think 'Spider' is a must watch

Hey, I thought you had her at 'Squishy Ball'

I think Spider was horrible. And as you say yourself, it's not very similar. Besides, it's was far from David Cronenberg's first movie (he had been active for at least 30 years at that time!). Concerning the budget, $8.000.000 isn't a lot compared to big motion pictures. But compared to a budget of an average low budget movie, for instance $6.000 (which was the budget of Following), it's a gigantic amount.

All these voices in my head, and not a single one I understand.

Indeed, they are similar.
They are both about a character closely following a criminal, although "Man Bites Dog" is made to resemble a documentary. Quite interesting both movies, though.

watch this . a movie named 3-iron ....plot like FOLLOWING

I would have to say Primer. Extremely minimal budget, brilliantly intelligent script, simple to-the-point cinematography, totally in the vein of Following and Pi, Pi especially, what with the science fiction "but what if it REALLY happened" theme.

Check out "Reservoir Dogs" if you haven't already.

You should definitely check out "Memento", Nolan's second film. The style of the film is very similar with the music, cinematography, and non-linear plot structure. It is also Nolan's best film.

When I saw "following" for the second time, I was anxious to get to the film board and check if there is a discussion about similar movies to "following". I just finished reading your posts. Is that all you 've got? "Reservoir Dogs", "Memento" and "Grand Theft Auto"??? FFS!!! Guys, this is one of the most genious scripts with twists you cant expect and there is not even one suggestion about another superintelligent film? I love Reservoir Dogs and I was expecting it to be here, but lets make an effort and get some more good films! I will check out "Primer" and "Screamplay" and I hope some more similar posts will be sent soon.

I'd try Pickpocket (1959) by Robert Bresson. I found this one very similar, although Pickpocket is a lot more minimalistic and discreet. It also depicts a similar, shady lifestyle as Following.
