Frustrated with Peter Greenaway

He really makes some stunning films, really beautiful to look at. I can't fault his vision, or more particularly his ability to get that vision on to the screen, But I do get so frustrated with other aspects of his films.

Having just watched this film, I was just so bored. By the storyline, and the pace of it. But the main thing I have a problem with is that somehow he seems to bring the worst out of his cast - some of the acting in this (and in other films he's made) is just lamentable.

To be fair, I don't know if he's deliberately creating a mood with the way he manages the performances, if it's something he intends and I just don't get. But notwithstanding that I fully appreciate the fantastic nature of the scenarios he presents, I can't believe in them because the characters don't just seem unreal (which would be OK) but actually lack credibility.

I do like Greenaway, but I can't go all the way with him. I get halfway to enjoying his films, but then restlessness and irritation get in the way.
