What was the function of Kim (the cook) in the story?

For me some scenes with Kim (the cook) were not so clear.
What was the function of Kim in relation to the plot?
It seems not just a contrast between kitchen-workers and the high-society they serve dinner to...

I think Kim knows or guesses what has been happening in that household. He says he grew up with Christian and even stole apples with him. Finally he had a chance to help his old friend.

Excuse my English please, not a native speaker.

He cooked.

Did you fall asleep or what? How can you not get it?

He was Christian's backbone, he knew about his plan and he wanted him to "murder the king" in front of everyone that day, and he did everything for it to happen (give Christian a stinging pep talk when he wanted to apologize and leave, hide all the car keys, lock up that one guy in the wine cellar).

Christian was psychologically unstable and Kim (the chef, his childhood friend) was his Lady Macbeth, with the best intentions though.

The cook definitely knew about his friend's troubles, and knew his plan to expose his dad during dinner. He was trying to be a calm rock in the storm, so the son didn't take his own life from the stress of trying to tell the truth.
