I can't believe this classic game has been forgotten! Anyway, if anybody actually reads this, which ship was your favorite? Mine was the Tie Defender by far. 4 laser cannons, 2 ion cannons, decent payload of missiles, deflector shield, and a tractor beam! Not to mention it's the fastest ship in the game.

Oh come on, someone must have read my original post by now!

Hey! if you have a copy of x-wing alliance, you can go to Darksaber's X-Wing Alliance page, and get a total conversion, so you can play TIE Fighter with modern graphics, on a modern system! AWESOME!

Never expected to see you here, Marx. (Seen you over at Dark Knight)

Tie Interceptor - no shields and insanely fast. A bit like an even lighter A-Wing.

I loved that game - it fixed most of the flaws X-Wing had and balanced well between the genres of flight simulation and arcade game, making it probably the ultimate game of its kind.

TIE Advanced (also known as the TIE Avenger) was my favorite, harder to hit than the A-Wing, four laser cannons, shields, hyperdrive--it's all an Imperial pilot could possibly want. Stick a Beam Weapon on that thing and even better.

TIE Defender, although more powerful and more lethal was easier to hit.

reply

Nah, MISSLE BOAT for me - it's almost at good as setting ammo to 'unlimited' without the point deduction.

I still play this on occasion.

I was never a gamer, but this one has really held-up for me.

Do you know of any cheats for this game. The only one I've heard of is entering the name 'BONUS' in the pilot list on game start-up, it's supposed to unlock a variety of features - I haven't tried it yet.

reply

Interesting, haven't tried that. Yep, TIE Fighter holds up really well today.

I recently finished the Missile Boat mission where you have to clear a minefield, except everything you destroy a mine, a missile homes in on you. I had to be very patient... lol. Tap 'n' on the keyboard and that thing is fast!

In case you don't have a walkthrough on the game, I've found this one to be excellent:
