Fond memories of Orguss 02

I remember having VHS’s of ninja scroll, ghost in the shell and angel cop in the mid 90’s and before the feature they would show you a few trailers. Orguss 02 always stood out in the trailers and I always kept a look out for it but unfortunately couldn’t ever find it.

Fast forward a few years to around about 2003, flicking through some channels before bed. I spotted it on the UK Sci Fi channel. Being a student at the time it was easy to put off going to sleep and powering through lessons the next day with a coffee and red bull liquid diet throughout the day.

It pulled me in straight away, well worth the pain it caused the next day. With adverts I’m pretty sure it went on for like close to 5hrs. Definitely worth it though. I managed to pick it up on DVD a few years later on a visit to Manchester. Kind of lost it in a house move though, which sucks.

I’ve never really met anyone who has seen Orguss 02 and didn’t really expect much when I visited the board here. As I’ve always thought it quite obscure. Just my 2 cents.

I can relate, and seeing this lonely year-and-a-half-old post of yours, I feel like I have to reply.

I watched through the entire Robotech corpus just a couple of years ago. I'm someone who, when he enjoys a show, likes to watch every last thing anyhow related to it. So since finishing Robotech, I felt compelled to watch all of the Japanese source material and every show or movie related to those series. This line of thinking led me to the first Orguss series (which was not part of Robotech but was part of the loosely tied Super Dimension family whose other two members were part of Robotech), which then led me to this.

By finals week in my Spring 2014 college semester here in the United States, I had Orguss 02 loaded on my tablet but not watched beyond the catchy intro, which I had watched several times. (I later found out that Orguss 02 had two opening themes, both of which you can find on YouTube as of today; but I should clarify that since my videos were from a North American release, all six episodes featured this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4MFqkV4Ee4 [That's the one with vocals, for anyone reading this beyond the likely event that the video gets pulled].) The night before my first final, I had my backpack in my room but couldn't bring myself to study. I instead procrastinated on the Internet until four a.m., then I got into bed and tried to sleep. Unable, I watched the first two episodes of Orguss 02 in bed and then set my alarm and got a few hours of sleep. The night after I pushed through that final all bleary-eyed, I had another final scheduled for the next morning. Same story with procrastinating on the Internet and going into bed, except this time I watched the last four episodes, completely hooked and unable to put my tablet down. I got just one hour of sleep that night.

I don't want to seem pretentious, but as someone who didn't grow up with these anime series, I still couldn't help but feel a little nostalgic over the hand-drawn 4:3 animation style and quaint, campy charm of the storytelling. I don't know if you saw the first Orguss series, but I would highly recommend it as an even more unique, lighter-toned, entertaining, and downright charming series (and thirty-five episodes to Orguss 02's six). As trite as it is to say, they really don't make them like this anymore. As for your missing Orguss 02 DVD (set?), you might ask yourself if it's ethically justifiable to, let's say, recover a copy of the series from some obscure corner of the Internet, seeing how you already paid for it on DVD.

Well Pure-D, since your last post on IMDb as of now was the year-and-a-half-old one to which I am replying, I'm not sure that you'll actually read this. My final thoughts anyway: I am unpleasantly surprised by how low this series is rated here (6.6 as of now); it hooked me like I hadn't been hooked by an animated entertainment in months. I am equally disappointed in how dead this board is, although I can understand how the macabre, melodramatic storytelling (a large part of what hooked me, another part being the attractive animation and backdrops) doesn't leave a whole lot for us to get puzzled or excited about and discuss here.
