I heard there was an independently made rip-off of 'Celluloid Closet' called 'The Lavender Lens'. Could this be the one?

Ummm....The Celluloid Closet isn't an indie? This doc is hardly a "ripoff". It makes its own points, with a great deal of tongue-in-cheek humor.
