Story

I was hoping to write a story that would be somewhat based on the first game with some touches of the fourth. My question is, aside from the constant theme of war that is apparent in the games, the weapons, and the H.P. Lovecraftian atmosphere, what do you guys recommend should be in the story?

Maybe some backstory to the Strogg. Involvement in Quake 1 or something. I dunno, I don't play Quake I just ended up at this board by following NIN. :)

I think the Strogg are a bit out of place in Quake 1. At least, if mankind faces off against them in the same timeline, it should be decades after the 'Quake' incident.

I think a good place to start is bring the Cthulhu Mythos into the present day, and speculate what might occur if our government/military came under secret, immediate threat by it. Whether it is faithful to the mythos or simply influenced by it is up to you, but I think the glory of Quake's antagonist is that it is horrific and nearly incomprehensible. It shouldn't be explained, at least not in exposition.

Thanks, mikemann.

id Software originally was going to start Quake 2 as a different franchise with a different name. However they couldn't use the title they desired since it was already taken, so after some brainstorming they decided to just say "Oh hell, lets just call it 'Quake'. We own that already." (- John Carmack I think).

So if you intend on continuing as a true sequel, you might want to leave the Strogg out. If you want to follow the Chthulu mythos. I would make it more about psychological horror after Ranger's (the Player/Marine's name) ordeal with Quake. Instead of seeing actual monsters/aliens they would be manifestations from his mind. Or it could a mix of him be trapped in the world he's in after going through the slipgates, and some of the enemies are real and some of them are hallucinations.

That just my $0.02, and probably the direction I would go since they really never developed on his character, which I know Quake was just about you being in the situation with an Axe a Shotgun and the will to survive at any needs possible. Not much depth needed there, but still would be an interesting take on the story.

AdrianShepard - I finished a draft some time ago. Could I PM it to you to see if I'm on the right track? I don't mean to impose, I just like to hear other people's opinions. They're really useful in determining how to further improve the story.

reply

You're not imposing, by all means. I'd like to see what direction you are taking.

Thank you.

Evolution, you should come to yog-sothoth.com and ask the grand idea man behind Quake, Sandy Petersen himself. He lurks there quite a bit and when he's around, he's great fun and willing to answer most any question.

I thought Quake was the brainchild resulting from conflicting needs between John Romero, Carmack and the staff of ID.
