Was Peter being a total jerk towards Joanna? "SPOILERS"

"SPOILER ALERT"

During the scene when Peter finds out about Joanna having sex with Lumburgh did anyone think Peter was being such a total jerk towards Joanna when he gets on her case about her having sex with Lumburgh?

I personally did and felt it was none of Peter's business as to who Joanna has dated or had sex with in the past, I've found Peter to be totally unlikable in that scene.

reply

Peter is whiny and immature throughout the entire movie. Even Richard Riehle's character called him out on it.

reply

I did like Peter for most of the movie but the way he acted towards Joanna having sex with Lumburgh was totally obnoxious and uncalled for.

reply

He wouldnt have acted that way if he'd known which Lumberg.

He wasn't mad at Joanna for having sex.....just with one particular person.

reply

He complains about Lumbergh having him to come in on the weekend, and when he is shutting down his workstation and he's like "Come on!" at the computer, and when he throws his arms up in the air. He blames other people and inanimate objects for his own problems and frustrations in life.

I found him to be a whiny, arrogant tool. He blames everybody and everything else for his "problems" in life, yet blaming none of his unhappiness or discontent on himself.

I didn't find his boss Lumbergh that bad, nor did I find his job to be all that stressful. If he hated his job so much, he should have quit and found work somewhere else. This was 1999, when the economy was booming.

Michael, Samir, Joanna, and even Tom Smykowski call him out on it.

If I was interested in a girl and found she had slept with someone like Lumbergh I would be wondering what kind of girl she is. On saying that he was a total jerk the way he treated Joanna about it.

reply

"I would be wondering what kind of girl she is" that is so unfair. Who someone has slept with in the past really shouldn't matter. I did find the dream sequence *beep* hilarious though LMAO

Oh bull. I take a lot of flake from girls about the other girls I slept with in the past so I don't mention it any more.

While i find that he did complain about most things to a extent thats wasnt always appropriate, the thing about Jennifer Anistan's xharacter i can understand. Maybe you are lucky and it wouldn't bother you but it would piss me off if someone i loathed and was annoying to me slept with a girl i was considering dating. Lucky that you wouldn't be bothered by them sleeping with Justin Beeber, Snookie, Honey Boo Boo's mom, Kenye West, Kim West, etc. Because it bothers me, I never ask because i dont want to know.

I think that was the point. Peter even acknowledged it later in the movie.

The whole theme of the movie was that you're never trapped in a situation. You can be happier by making things different for yourself. Presumably Mike Judge drew from his own experiences going from an engineer to a cartoonist because he felt just like Peter did at the beginning of the movie.

He was a jerk AND out of line AND wrong, BUT he's also human. He found out the woman he's falling hard for is a former lover of the man he loathes more than any other human on the planet. A man he thinks to be a slimy scumbag. His whole world just got rocked and it hit him in the gut right as he was feeling proud to be with her.

He just freaked out like any other human with emotions would. He eventually realized he was wrong (even if it wasn't the right Lumburgh) and apologized.

Relationships are filled with irrationality. I had a GF a while back hide her 'party girl' past from me (until one of her friends started telling stories at a party) because she thought I'd freak out because a couple of her ex's did when they found out. I was genuinely surprised they cared, because I don't care what people did before they met me. It's not like I didn't have an existence before I met them. Now I do care what they do when we're dating, of course.

But for some guys it's an issue. Chasing Amy there was a similar thing.

He WAS a total dick head in that scene but he does realise that ans apologise to her at the end.
