I'll Need You To Come in On Saturday

Technically, would that not be a good thing? Unless the job does not give overtime, they should all be excited to come in on Saturday.

Lmao yeah, because Peter didn't despise his job or anything

sunday is better.

I guess if you hated your job THAT MUCH. Then again, overtime man. IDK..for me, I like the extra cash and would be willing to foot it out.

Then again, I do have a job that is somewhat similar. The boss is great, the coworker who keeps correcting me on things, on the way I say them (because guiding people is the part of my job) and then telling me that he has two years experience to know how to say something right, is really making me hate my job.

I work 2nd shift and am paid shift differential and weekend pay. Of course, if I do not get a raise after six months, I am gone!

Office jobs in the tech industry are nearly all exempt. So coming in on Saturday is working for free.

reply

And THAT puts the nail in the coffin. Good night ladies and gentleman!

Every once in a while is ok but you could tell this happens a lot.

Months on end(I know) is such a bitch.

Waddya nuts? that never happens - unless you are so high up your salary could fund 4 or 5 normal techs, in which cvase thay might want you to do the od sat for free. in foact no , not even then.

A friend of mine is on a Ludicrous salary , and gets paid overtime - at his normal rate - he moans that he dosent get 1.5 times pay.

reply

Funny thing Lumbergh said due to staff cuts we all now have to put in extra hours. I have been in this position before. Working extra unpaid hours will not save your job but will get the big boss a fat bonus.

reply

That is so wrong. Every hour SHOULD be paid. Of course, if you live in a state where businesses rule, it would be a forced thing. I still cannot believe, if you are in the U.S., that we have businesses that still do that. Not only that, they cut overtime pay or find ways around trying to pay what you rightfully deserve. I have worked in a variety of different jobs( 40 hours a week jobs), part times, freelance, and even the movies. Why do I categorize all these jobs? Because they all have different ethnics, no seriously.

For a job that I work 40 hours a week, the best things I get are health insurance and retirement. My paycheck is low pay, I do get shift diff, and weekend pay.

For my part times, I have gotten absolutely NO shift diff (even working odd hours, since it was a variable hour job) and no benefits (typical, it's part time).

For freelance, I get paid much better than any full time and part times, almost triple to quadruple minimum wage. I am with one agency that does give a 403b, but no health insurance (freelance, duh).

In the movie industry, here is where the perks come in. Being non union, I get paid OVERTIME on any time after the 8th hour. ANYTIME AFTER THE 8TH HOUR!! I get free snacks and a free lunch. I AM A REGULAR HOUSE PET! No health and no retirement.

So I ask. If the movie industry still plays by the rules, how are other businesses getting away with not paying for hours and/or not paying overtime? It disturbs me! Private businesses should want to be better than public businesses and offer more. What we see is a stagnation of businesses that whine and not provide even the bare minimum at times.

All this I have seen before turning the age of 27 this year. Some people never see overtime in their lives (well, I cannot confirm that).

For most full-time jobs (in software at least as my experience) it's due to the fact that our pay is not based on hourly pay, but your value for the year. If i come in a bit late, take off an hour or two early for a special event, take a long lunch, or grab a coffee, nobody is expecting me to "make it up" to reach at least 40 hours in a week since it tends to balance out over the course of a year.

I'm sure a lot of managers are strict about, like Lumbergh, but that's when there ends up being lots of turnover due to a bad work environment.

reply

I am not sure if Lumbergh was strict about it, as we saw Peter and his friends take a break at a moment's notice. Peter did say that he hated his job and so, he could have cared less about losing his job. His friends never really had shown that they did not like that particular job and they would not have taken a break if it had broken job policy. Then again, they were in cahoots about stealing the money from the company's account, so I do know...

So I guess you could be right.

Go away Lumbergh. I'm kinda busy here, and I have a meeting with the Bobs later.

Coming in on Saturday is one thing, having to come in at 8:00 am on Saturday - quite another.

we used to go in at 07.00 for saturday overtime , that way we could knock off about 13:00 and still have some of a day left

reply

Yeah hi.... Just wanted to make sure that we do work till the usual time on Saturday. It's not like it's a half day or anything.

And the idiots at IMDB will have to come in on Saturday (and Sunday) for pulling the plug on the message boards. Morons!

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

reply

Kind of sucks. I had a great time on these boards and mingling with others' opinions. :'( I am not even sure why they would be pulling the plug. This feature basically regulates itself, unless they are laying off administrators for budget reasons.

It is a tad bit more disorganized than this board. It will definitely take some time getting use to.

But Peter just didn't have a bad case of the mondays. He had a bad case of the everyday's at Innotech.

reply

If it's a choice, it CAN be a 'good thing'.

However, this all depends on whether you appreciate money over time or vice versa.

It's all about freedom as well.

It's funny that people can scream about freedom a lot and say 'this is the land of the free' - but then accept corporate wage slavery, like a good, little drone, no questions asked.

Peter appreciates freedom and time more than money. Therefore, if he _HAS_ to come in on saturday, it's only a loss for him, even if he is paid a little more.

His problem was that he couldn't say no, although he WANTED to, so to him, saturdays were agonizing, health-killing timewasters that were slowly destroying his soul by denying him what he values the most: freedom and time.

Lumbergh was basically stealing Peter's freedom and own time to do whatever he wants by reducing his weekend from a two-day into a one-day weekend.

I can certainly understand Peter's viewpoint on this, but I can't understand why you can't. Do you view corporate wage-slavery and droneism like this a 'good thing'?

It's NEVER a good idea to trade away your soul for more money, so it can never really be a good thing. Maybe some people enjoy being oppressed, so perhaps for them, this can be a good thing.

However, there is a REASON why weekends exist, and why they are free of work.

There have been numerous studies and experiments with smaller weeks, smaller days, and the productivity actually goes up quite a lot, when you only have to work three hours a day, three days a week (just as an example).

But corporations want to keep it 8 hours and 5 days for some reason, and as we can see from this movie, they want even more of your time and soul, and all you get is a tiny crumb out of their billions.

How the F can you even see this as a good thing?
