Did Guy like Aldys?

Seemed there are a lot of tension between the two. Hell, he even danced with her at the prom. Admittedly it was because he and his gang were pulling a prank on her, but it almost seemed that when Guy was dancing with her he was sort of into her. In so many other teen romance flicks, that's usually what happens: popular teen falls for a not-so-popular type, then "reforms" if you will.

R u retarded? He danced with her so they could throw the cat food or w.e on her

reply

Maybe secretly he did - their dance was pretty intense. I doubt she would have anything more to do with him after the dogfood thing, though. Very mean. Although, maybe he could deny all knowledge of the plot.

See, that's the thing I never could figure out. Was Guy in on the prank? Or did he really want to dance with her? I know some people assume that he was in on the prank. But I don't think there's enough evidence to support that.

I used to think he was in on the prank but the more times I watch that the less I think he was. I think Guy would have felt that sort of thing too childish and ''beneath'' him and the way he was so antagonistic towards her earlier on, more so than ever with josie, led me to believe there some some tension between the two. I think he was feeling happy at the prom and just wanted to apologize.

I hadn't seen this since it was first released on video, but I had remembered the Guy character as the typical teen movie jerk; and for the first half or so he's certainly trending in that direction, though not as overtly as you would expect. But when he falls for Drew's character he seems like a pretty decent guy (no pun--okay, pun intended). He's even kind of a romantic sort. Not a jock or an airhead. I was waiting for some twist I'd forgotten where he's luring Josie into a trap at prom, but it never came. Then the scene with Aldys happens.

You're geared to think he's simply setting her up, but the movie certainly doesn't make it clear that he's in on it. But his mea culpa to Aldys also feels unearned. We don't see a moment where the light goes on and Guy regrets his earlier behavior. Ultimately his character is poorly realized because of murky motivations.

I never thought Guy was into the Prank. I think he had an attraction to her and had some remorse on how he had treated her over the years. My take was that he was a Senior and wanted to make amends with her. I also think both were into each other but because they traveled with different groups they probably never acted on it.

I don't think so. He danced with her at the prom to get her into range for that prank, which backfires. Notice at the end of the film, he isn't kissing her like the other groups are doing?

reply

Aldys was in love with Guy, so he enjoyed torturing her. He didn't have feelings for her other than using her pain to satisfy his own ego.

Likewise, Billy enjoyed torturing Josie when she was in high school.

Their dynamic reminded me a lot of the one between Stef and Andie in Pretty in Pink or the one between Joey and Kay in 10 Things I hate about you... only toned down. So maybe. Or maybe it was just actor chemistry.

reply

I think he was in on it. Josie had noticed the set up as she was dancing with the teacher and she recalled when she was set up when she was in high school.
