Very good, but falls short of other Loach masterpices like Kes and Looking for Eric.

shareBetter than quite a few other Loach films. More authentic than most, very touching performances all around. How can you not warm to Joe and his demons?
shareHis two 'historical epics' notwithstanding, there are generally two types of Loach films; slice of life human dramas (such as this, Kes and Riff Raff) and didactic soap box ones (Hidden Agenda, Bread and Roses, Ladybird Ladybird).
The former are nearly always superior IMO - Carla's Song is an interesting exception in that it starts out as one and ends up as the other.
Except that Ladybird is one of his best films...
