The daugher-in-law elect

What is the name of the Mikado character who is the "daughter-in-law elect," and who plays the role? Because of the make-up it's difficult to identify the Topsy Turvy character playing the role, and I can't seem to do it from the film credits.

The Mikado's "daughter-in-law-elect" is Katisha, portrayed by Rosina Brandram. (Katisha/Brandram is played by Louise Gold.) Dialogue about Katisha is included in the rehearsal scene with Grossmith, Bond, Barrington, and Mr. Seymour. ("She has a left elbow people come miles to see.") Outside of the stage production, Brandram is only seen twice. She is briefly in the background when Miss Sixpence Please and the other Japanese ladies demonstrate walking, and she is the one who asks Gilbert if he's cutting Mr. Temple's solo and replies, "I do think that's a shame."

The character is named Katisha, and she's played by Louise Gold. Rosina Brandram was the name of the actress who played the part originally on stage.

It's a mystery to me why her role is almost invisibe in the film whereas all the other eight actors who had roles in the original production are featured much more prominently.

I agree, Dizexpat! Rosina was so important in the original Savoy productions of G&S. Perhaps she's featured less in the movie because she always played the older, less glamourous women on stage.

I know that my redeemer livith, as the watch remarked to the Chatham street pawnbroker.

The reason you suggest for her role being almost non-existant may have some truth, but it's a pretty poor excuse.

I suspect her role may have been larger in the original version, but was edited out because of the film's length.

She seems to just suddenly "emerge" out of nowhere during the song, whereas we have already gotten to know the other principles in the production quite well.

Many thanks for this discussion. I do find Leigh's treatment of her very intriguing - many questions unanswered.

BTW Louise Gold played the part of Edith in the 1983 film version of Pirates. I think its kinda cool

Have you accepted Jason Isaacs as your personal Saviour?

I kind of enjoy her sudden appearance in the movie. After all of the preparation and rehearsals seen within the movie, it livens things up to have a new character erupt onto the stage. When she sings the lines "Bow, bow!" with such power and authority, it knocks you off your feet after getting used to the more dainty stage roles as played by the other actresses.

In her stage makeup she reminds me of Angelica Huston, an actress who plays powerful female characters very well.

reply

Yes! I see the resemblance.

reply

Yes. Yes. Very powerful indeed and also very much like Ms. Huston.

I saw this originally in the theater and recently caught this one on DVD and had forgotten how good she was.
Right after that scene with the "Bows" the actress stands around regaling in all her soon to be power. Then she looks over her shoulder and sees her future father-in-law standing back up by the doorway and has to do a quick about face to get back up there "in her rightful place."
It was very funny.

Not being familiar with The Mikado, I thought this character was being played by the character of Jessie Bond...till I gradually came to notice they were both on stage at the same time.

They look kind of similar in stage makeup, general build, etc.
