Was the cutting of the Mikado song true to life
It was a dramatic high point of this highly entertaining film, but just as it didn't make sense to the cinematic cast, it doesn't make sense to this viewer. Did it really happen?

shareYes. Gilbert didn't think the song was funny enough and too similar to the Excecutioner's song "I've Got a Little List" in Act I.
It was only the intervention of the chorus that kept it in.
The church may shout but Darwin roars
Well lets face it, it isn't really any more silly than trying to cut Over The Rainbow from "Wizard Of Oz".
shareI didn't think the song was great. If you compare it to other G&S songs it doesn't measure up and if Gilbert was not a ruthless editor these pieces wouldn't sparkle and snap the way they do.
It was pretty clear that the cast wanted the song kept on because they had a soft spot for Mr. Temple and they didn't want his part wittled away rather than because the song was brilliant.
