Was the cutting of the Mikado song true to life

It was a dramatic high point of this highly entertaining film, but just as it didn't make sense to the cinematic cast, it doesn't make sense to this viewer. Did it really happen?

reply

Yes. Gilbert didn't think the song was funny enough and too similar to the Excecutioner's song "I've Got a Little List" in Act I.

It was only the intervention of the chorus that kept it in.

The church may shout but Darwin roars

reply

Well lets face it, it isn't really any more silly than trying to cut Over The Rainbow from "Wizard Of Oz".

reply

I didn't think the song was great. If you compare it to other G&S songs it doesn't measure up and if Gilbert was not a ruthless editor these pieces wouldn't sparkle and snap the way they do.

It was pretty clear that the cast wanted the song kept on because they had a soft spot for Mr. Temple and they didn't want his part wittled away rather than because the song was brilliant.

Whatever any one person's opinion, it's been one of the most popular and often-quoted songs in all of G&S. Gilbert was wrong and the cast was right.

No one ever forgets the chorus.
No one ever remembers the verses.
