Hi...if anyone out there in the world knows where I can get a copy of this movie Id love to hear from you as Ive been looking for a copy of this movie for the past 23 years. email me here.. [email protected]
I am trying to trace the identity of the very first film I ever saw in a cinema, and I was told on the 'I need to know' board that 'Dirkie' aka 'Lost in the Desert' may be it.
Just to make sure, did the following happen?
A young man (age 18?) sets off on a journey in a small aircraft.
He crashes the plane in a desert, but survives with his little Yorkie(?) dog.
After he is missing for a while, his father who works in a city arranges for paper fliers to be dropped out of helicopters along the assumed route.
A wild dog in the desert sniffs at one of the fliers. (I wonder now if this could have been a dingo).
The boy’s pet dog has pups, which he puts in his various shirt and trouser pockets(!)
Desperate for food, he points a gun at the mother dog. (Audience goes ‘aahh’ - You see why I remembered it so well?!!) But he does not shoot.
At the end his father finally finds him unconscious in the sand, and carries him off.
But it’s not clear if the boy is alive or not!
I would love to see this film again and be put out of my thirty-year long misery! But could the others who are after 'Dirkie' it let me know if this is the film I'm after? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Its a relief to know that this film affected so many people in the same way because for ages I thought that maybe I was just a really sensitive child or something? Lets face it, the film was absolutely shocking.
It had suspense by the bucket, as well as being haunting/disturbing/unforgettable and maybe twisted?? etc etc
However, I dont really think seeing it again would help me to get over it, if you know what I mean. In its offbeat way I think it was a remarkable piece of film-making but I have often asked myself if it was really a children's film at all, even though it was screened as the 'B' shortie along with Sinbad as the main feature.
Hi, I watched "Lost in dessert" in Spain when I was young and of course it is "!Dirkie", in Spain, I was very sad when the kid went blind because of a snake, it was called of course "Perdido en el Desierto". But same days I watched another similar movie and I remember it was about a young boy who lost his mother in bombardage of a arabian city and he lost also in the desert! Can anybody remind me wich movie it was? I rememeber it was something (in Spain) called "Adventures of....." Please remember me as one day I found it on internet but I didn't have time to write as I was ocuppied doin' something more interesting! regards mel

Hi there, Was wondering if you could send me some info on the dvd "Dirkie, lost in the desert" Have been looking for this movie to buy for quite a while now and would love to purchase a copy if possible. Thanks Scott
The Afrikaans movie “Dirkie” and its English translation “Lost in the Desert” have both been released on the same DVD by Ster Kinekor in South Africa around November 2005. The two films differ slightly, but what was disappointing is the fact that the Afrikaans version is not complete, being only 70 minutes in length. I think one of the roles became lost because the ending is too abrupt. Ster Kinekor should have looked at the Afrikaans copy and try to fill in the missing part from the English version onto it. There is basically no dialogue (only music) on the missing section and this could have been done without anybody noticing it.
The quality of the DVD is good considering its age. It is wide screen and there are some lines here and there especially at the opening credits on the Afikaans version. The rest of the film is almost perfect. There are many VHS copies available and one can pay up to $164 for a VHS copy if one does not search around. My copy is an official DVD copy and costs only R110 ( = US$18.25) + postage. I found the company to be very prompt and had the copy within 2 days, beautifully packaged and secure. Here is the link to order it. (it is PAL, not NTSC)
You can also get the above DVD by purchasing the “Mimosa 2 box set” from the same link as above. This contains the above DVD packaged together with “The gods must be crazy II” for R145 (= $24.13). (2 discs both PAL)
If you are looking for an NTSC copy, you can find an unofficial copy for around $30 on the IMDB site, just look under comments of the people who saw this movie.
Now something else – I am looking for VHS or DVD copies of
“After you comrade” (AKA “All the way to Paris” and “The sheltering desert”. This has been released on DVD now but is only available from Greece if you willing to pay through your neck. Do you know of anybody who can help me?
Hi. I'm coming a bit late into this - but I've been looking for
this movie for a few years, having first seen it in my teens around
1970.
This message board appears not to quote messages you're replying
to, like some do - but I'm responding to Travoose, presumably in
Australia, who ordered a copy of "Lost in the Desert" from S
Africa and said they were happy with it. (I assume this was using the
site mentioned by someone else, at:

I just wanted to ask about this. I know practically nothing
about movie formats: but I understood that there were different
regions, and you couldn't play the movies from one region on a machine
from another. And Australia and South Africa are in different zones,
aren't they? I'm in Australia too. So if you read this, Travoose,
could you please let me know how you dealt with the different regions'
formats? (Or if anyone else knows about this, could they please
explain it?) I'm thinking of getting a copy from South Africa, but I
want to be sure on this point first.
In short, if I buy a copy from South Africa, will I be able to
use it in Australia? (May be a dumb question; but, as I said above, I
know nothing about movie formats.)
Thanks.
People seem to remember this movie fondly, so I have that in
common with them. But I was a bit puzzled at the couple of comments
that found the movie bad and/or shocking, even a bit perverted, and
wondered if I remembered it wrongly. To be sure, there were upsetting
or dangerous events - but doesn't *every* movie have some of these? I
don't recall this one having anything unduly outrageous.
As far as I remember, it was a good movie, and I would have
thought quite suitable for children. But it *is* over 35 years since
I last saw it - so maybe there are parts I've forgotten.
You can contact people by clicking on their names and sending them a private message, and you can respond to quotes by other people:
Select the text of theirs you want to use as a quote, and copy and paste into your post. Then add [quote] to the beginning and [ / quote] to the end - without the spaces.
See 'Mark-up enabled' immediately above every editing box for more options.
It sounds like Travoose didn't have any problems with his video from South Africa.
The South African DVD is region 2, which means you will need a multi-region DVD player to watch it, but most DVD players sold nowadays either come region free already or they can be easily hacked with a remote control code. Google "DVD player hacks" and search for your make and model and you should be on your way. The Dirkie DVD is already PAL format so it's compatible with the Australian TV system in that respect. It plays just like a normal DVD on my region-free player, no problems at all.
Simply Movies on Sky satellite channel 341 in the UK is transmitting it today 16.4.09 at 11:00 am. They normally repeat their movies every month sometimes more often. The listing can be seen at http://tv.sky.com/tvlistings which can be used to search for near future screenings. They put out classic films never transmitted by our public service broadcasters actual and wannabee.
Very late in addressing this but I just got a very clear copy with both Afrikkaners and English versions on 1 disc. Got it from someone in Turkey with a 5 titles for $14.00 deal, and this was one of my choices. Glad I got it, only one available currently is from the UK for $29.00. This was an Ioffer acquisition and so a bootleg copy. Movie gets to the point and moves rapidly, little waste; captivating.
