At last...

This film has been haunting me for years. For nearly 40 years, to be precise. Of all the films I watches as a kid at the Saturday morning film club, this is the only one I can remember. The details are now hazy, but I remember crying buckets at the bit where you think the dog has died.

And now I've just bought a copy from moviepursuit.co.uk so I can finally see what so moved me all those years ago.

I just want sausages and mash and a bit of cake. Not twigs fried in honey or a donkey in a coffin!

You use the word "haunting" with this movie: It is EXACTLY what i have been through these last 37 years...

in times of internet I was catching up with all sort of fogged memories... I have managed to identify so many of them - but this one eluded me for so long.
Last try was a year ago, using keywords here in imdb.
And today, on a whim, I input some keywords in Google and now there is even an article on the movie in Wikipedia.
And specially the comment in "reactions":

Quote-
The film was not widely available for many years after its original release, but discussions on film-related forums[1] and personal blogs[2] show that aspects of the film are remembered very vividly and with horror by those who saw it as children. It seems to have struck a particular chord in the UK, where it was released in cinemas as a double-bill with The Golden Voyage of Sinbad in 1974.

Discussions and memories of the film posted online suggest that viewers appear to have been haunted by scenes from the film for many years, without being able to identify the film itself. Certain scenes are regarded with some unease or horror, possibly even casting doubt on whether the film is suitable for children, although its overall style seems to suggest that it was conceived as a children's film.

Now my smile - should I suddenly pass away - can be a bit wider, knowing what movie it was, and that i was not the only one being HAUNTED by it...

Hans

This is amazing reading other's from around the world with the same experience. I'm from oz & also saw this as a kid in the seventies. I never saw it again & had no idea what it was called but the scenes have always haunted me & for over 30 years wanted to see it again.

I always thought it was an Australian movie with an aboriginies & dingoes so it was an eye opener to read it's true setting. I was young & memory wasn't crystal clear.

I'm so happy to have found this & can't wait to watch it again.
