Absolutely! Jonathan Penner was a whopping 37 when this was released, old enough to have a 19-year-old son. I must say he doesn't quite look 37 here, but he looks way over 19.
shareI only recall that he is a Ph.D. student writing his dissertation - meaning he could certainly be much older than 19, easily in late 20s or even 30s depending on circumstances. In fact, doesn't he mention that he got locked up in an asylum at age 19? Meaning years ago?
At last! Someone who actually pays attention; not that I believed for one second that Penner had the intellectual horsepower requisite for doctoral candidacy. He also seemed to have muttered something about having spent “30 days” working on his dissertation, which is a few years short of the reality.
shareAnd now I have to say this: at about 10 minutes into the movie, Jack says that he’s working on his dissertation, but at nearly 51 minutes in, he declares that he was “Back East, GETTNG [emphasis added] my Doctorate of Philosophy.” One either has or works on one’s doctorate. The dissertation precedes the getting. Moreover, not all doctorates are Doctors of Philophy. One can be a Lit.D., as I am, or an Ed.D., as I am, or a J(uras).D., as I am not, or M.D., as I am not, in addition to being a PhD, as I am. What kind of homework did the writers do? This had so much potential.
