The guy that Vincent Cassel played in this film was a serial killer

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilles_de_Rais

Apparently he killed around 100 children, raping some of them as well.

Hmm, he seemed like a nice enough guy in the film

Well, it could be taken for sure, that he raped all off them, mostly boys. And even girls he did rape anally. According to historical sources there are about 144 known victims. But the real amount might be much higher - for example, the little kids, coming to the castle to beg, would no one ever miss.

At that period he was 'only' sadistic and brutal, but no serial killer. That started after the war and Joans death. But there are no sources that he behaved more brutal in the war than other soldiers. His total morally downfall came afterwords.

But in the end, he was not arrested for murdering lots of children - but for taking a priest hostage.

For all of you interested in that character, I can highly recommend this book:

'Gilles de Rais' by Georges Bataille.

Supposedly he became a serial killer as revenge against God for whom he blamed for turning His back on Joan when she needed him most. He was hanged for his crimes and was about to have his body burned when his family, at the last minute due to his Patriotic history to the King, was able to have his remains buried.

I've never read that interpretation of Gilles de Rais' mental breakdown.

But it is amazing how many of Joan's male companions/fellow soldiers lost their marbles later on in life.

reply

It's called PTSD and it is still happening.

Hi, Bob.

Well, he was convicted as such, anyway. But confession was extracted with torture, and other testimonies were likewise dubious. No hard evidence was presented.

reply

Hardly any evidence. 144 people is a lot of people to just go missing. There is speculation that he was framed.

reply

He would probably have been diagnosed with ptsd nowadays and because of it he had a mental breakdown, he also apparenrly was into occult stuff as well.
