question re: German reception

At the reception, when Jackie started carrying on in (apparently) German, I couldn't tell if she was butchering the language or making inappropriate comments. But it was obvious that whatever she was said, it created an awkward situation for the guests. They ultimately applauded, apparently out of politeness.

Could someone please explain what was that all about?

Remember the scene earlier, where Hilary and Jackie are dancing at the Italian princess's reception, and making each other laugh by randomly exchanging Italian words and phrases? Jackie is doing much the same thing here, only she's making more of the words up. She doesn't know German, she already told the young man that. Everyone applauds her because she's young and brilliant and she's trying to be funny in an awkward situation, so yes, they're being polite.
