Åmål-like movies?

*beep* Åmål is one of the most touching movies I've ever seen. I fact, I don't believe any movie ever touched me this much. And when it ended, I wanted more. I want to know if there is anything else like it out there. I know this is a very subjective question, but anyone who's seen *beep* Åmål will understand what kind emotional quality I am seeking.

The only movie I've seen so far that had a similar effect on me was Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.

I know there are recommendations under each title, but they don't stand for much. I was recommended Cruel Intentions and that doesn't even belong in the same galaxy with *beep* Åmål.

reply

i totally agree, cruel intentions what the hell? LOL. just coz there is a lesbian kiss doesnt mean we will like them both

but Eternal Sunshine and F'ing Amal are 2 of my fav movies.

what about Imagine Me and You?
Butterfly Effect
Donnie Darko
Big Fish

just some suggestions LOL.

The love story in Imagine Me and You was tainted by the fact that the husband was so likeable, thus killing the overall effect it was going for. I didn't cheer as loudly for the girls as I should have.

Butterfly Effect was powerful in the sacrifice that was made by Kutcher's character. The film overall was quite good but it didn't stay with me.

Speaking of Kutcher, A Lot like Love was maligned by the critics but I felt it was quite a sweet little film. I love the idea of two strangers who are drawn to each other over the course of 7 years after a chance encounter in an airport. Watch the credits -- the photo booth stills seem to convey the entire even flow of the film but done in the facial expressions of the characters.

What about Lost And Delirious, also starring Imagine's Piper Perabo? Lea Pool's masterpiece was one of those deeply emotional stories that stays with you long after it has ended.

I agree about Eternal Sunshine. Just beautiful.

Yeah i really liked the husband as well. and i felt sorry for him. but i think it was also saying that the husband doesnt have to be a bastard to make his wife to want to leave and be with someone else.
she really didnt want to hurt him. and they were better suited as friends.

a loved A Lot Like Love as well!
i thought it was a really great movie! its on my buy list lol.

What about Lost And Delirious

Amazon recommended this one after FÅ, but I didn't like it. The characters are a little too obvious for my taste.

reply

I liked it well enough but I consider Lost & Delirious much more of a melodrama or tragedy film than a romance, not really comparable with *beep* amal.... *beep* Amal is really one of a kind, but I would recommend My Summer of Love.

Ugh, what? Butterfly Effect and Donnie Darko might be decent movies, but they're certainly not similar to FÅ. In fact, I've seen BE once and never had the urge to see it again; it's a one-trick movie like Sixth Sense. I've seen FÅ thrice in three days when it came in the cinemas and dozens of times on DVD.

reply

umm she didnt say movies like *beep* amal but movies that had that emotional impact to them. and to bad if u didnt like butterfly effect coz alot of other people did.

I agree. Totally unlike FÅ though.

Water Lilies is the closest thing that comes to mind to *beep* Amal

You should try "My Life As A Dog"/Mit Liv Som Hund(sp?), directed by Lasse Hallstrom (who also directed What's Eating Gilbert Grape?).

Try

Wild Reeds
Welcome to the Dollhouse
Hana and Alice (Hana tu Arisu, hard to find Japanese film about a strong teenage female friendship)

reply

I second the recommendation of Wild Reeds. Elodie Bouchez was a cutie before she lopped off her long hair.

'Lucas' is another good one about teen alienation. Like FA the ending is inspirational.

You should check out http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0869977/ Naissance des pieuvres. It's a French film with a VERY similar coming of age feeling as *beep* Amal. You can watch the trailer here : http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2r7bx_bande-annonce-naissance-des-pieuvre_shortfilms

My feelings exactly. And there really isn't anything that compares. F... Åmål is the best romantic movie ever made, period.

You can always keep watching it over and over again. I did. It kept having a major emotional impact on me for at least the first five or six times I watched it (at the cinema). After that I knew everything by heart, so became a different, less overwhelming, experience. In total I've seen it about 20 times by now, I think.

It disturbs me that people here have mentioned "The Butterfly Effect," in context with *beep* Amal. Butterfly Effect was a rotten, rotten, ROTTEN movie. I mean, it was ROTTEN. By God, it was R o T T E N. Let me tell you, the movie was GONE OVER. It was 700 day-old chicken, left to rot on a plateau in Arizona. It was Lazurus, without Christ resurrecting him, served up in the mid '60's, on moldy rye bread with an extra helping of horseradish sauce and limburger cheese.

I hate that movie. And God hates it. And that's all I have to say. God bless you all.

Terence
P.S.; I love the movie *beep* Amal, otherwise known as "Show Me Love."

"ALL OVER ME"

That movie, more than any other, reminded me of this one. I love it to peices.
