I just watched the film recently after not watching it for at least five years, and even though i still think the last 40 minutes involving Elin and her realsing that she's gay and not too much of Agnes still is the weakest part of the film. But i still think the first 45 mins are excellent and the best Moodysson has done in his career so far.It probably doesn't hold up as one of the best films i ever saw when i first seen it but i still think its great cinema.
Anyway i just wondering does the film still have the same effect on you now then when you first saw it?
I loved it the second time. And I think the part with the 2 couples (Elin and sister and boyfriends) are fine too. It feels very real and gives the sense of her frustration. It also is a nice portrait of teenage relationships, the lack of real communication, the clumsiness, the expectations...
But I have love in my heart - Yes, as a thief has riches, a usurer money
I haven't seen this since it came out so my memory might be faulty here but I got the impression that Elin wasn't actually gay, she just wanted to be. It was more to do with her desire to be different than her sexuality. That's why they end up sitting there looking embarrassed and talking about chocolate milkshake. Or have I remembered this all wrong?
No she is gay and says so to her mum, then jokes about it. Her being gay is the whole reason why she is so dissatisfied with her life and friends and why she feels like she can be herself with Agnes who she really has fallen in love with. The chocolate milk is about her being comfortable around Agnes not about her being embarressed.
They're full of words, of how I want you...how...I love you
there is no such thing as 100% lesbian as much as there is no such thing as 100% straight guys OR girls, they are all on a spectrum, girls especially. The only true orientation is gay guys, because guys actually have to muster an erection so feeling nice and warmy is not enough to facilitate any otherwise willful act.

I find the exact same part the slowest and it's pretty much my only criticism of the film. I agree that even just a couple more scenes of Agnes mixed between those of Elin, Johann and her sister would have been great. And well, I first saw the film maybe a year ago so I still find it pretty great. I'm due for a rewatch though.

Any chance of a spoiler alert? I'm clicked on this to see if the movie aged well with a view to deciding if I'd buy it and you included spoilers I suspect are major. Not cool.
