Can someone explain to me what's going on in the video and who the people are that Trent is running away from in it?

It's NIN's first music video.. so my guess is that Trent was just kind of testing the water. But make your own interpretation, isn't that what art is supposed to be?

Well, the most common interpretation of the song is that it's about a suicide fantasy, though not like a suicide note. Everyone has a little fantasy about it, and this kinda looks like a low budget film. Maybe he's running from his fears and whatever would cause him to think about commiting suicide. P.S. when I say he, I'm not specifically referring to Reznor, but the central male the song is describing, but I guess that was Reznor originally.

It's a video of him trying to escape some thugs, but is a severely edited one at that. The real first video has Trent fall off a building at the end and the camera zooms up onto his body (which looks to be rotting). You can find more info at wikipedia for the video.

He's trying to escape from Nivek Ogre for completely ripping off the drum arrangement from Skinny Puppy's "Dig It".
