Ending?

What was the meaning of the way this movie ended? Is there anything known about the view of the director about this (maybe interviews)?

The ending deals with how Chilsu and Mansu are stuck in their unhappy lives and finally scream out to be heard. The irony is that no one hears them, and the authoritarian Korean government (as it was at that time) assumes they are protesting and seeks to suppress them. I have elaborated on the ending in this post:

Thanks for your reply Conranp. Insightful post. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie because of the realistic depiction of South-Korea during the late eighties. I believe it's an important movie for Korean cinema.
