As a man I thought this movie was excellent
My daughter is eight days old as I write this and I'm tired. I remember seeing trailers for this in 99 when I was 19 and I was like "this movie looks freaking gay" but since Portman was in it, and since I thought Portman was one of the most adorable creatures on earth back then I took note.
This movie is meant for adult chicks looking back on their childhood I think. What I like about it and what I understand, now, is how irrational people are (Adele), and the rational who have to put up with them (Ann). In this case Ann is the kid who has to live with this irrational person out of necessity, as a result, grows as a person. I also liked the fact that Adele taking Portman to California really did open her up to a world she probably never would have been exposed to had she stayed in Wisconsin surrounded by the mediocre.
I say as a man because this movie is way more layered then a mother daughter movie and I want to give credit where credit is due. I'm a dude who grew up with three brothers and was raised by wonderful parents. The point is there is nothing about this movie that I can relate to from personal experience but I could empathize with Ann and found it incredibly insight. They just don't make movies like these anymore.
One annoying flaw: I felt the pop music in this movie dumbed it down. Should have been orchestra all the way.
