5.8 user rating is a f---ing travesty.

I can't believe that moronic crapfests like Weddding Crashers get 7.0+ ratings and this beautiful movie gets a 5.8.

Just don't get it.

reply

Agreed although no need to compare it to Wedding Crashers which is also a worthy movie.

reply

Wedding Crashers isn't even worthy of an ass-wiping.

That could be the worst movie of all time.

reply

So true!

metascore and user score are too low. Roger Ebert brings refreshment to the scores with an 88/100. What's not to like about this movie?

My rating 8/10

reply

Roger Ebert was correct. Great movie.

I agree that "All the Pretty Horses" is better than a 5.8, but it's wrong to compare it to a crude comedy/romance like "Wedding Crashers." Not that I'm a fan of the latter, but movies can only be compared to similar movies, whether they're the same genre, same filmmakers or some other connection.

"All the Pretty Horses" should be compared to contemporary Westerns/historical dramas, like "The Horse Whisperer" and "The Assassination of Jesse James," or other flicks directed by Billy Bob Thorton, like "Sling Blade."

reply

I've never seen this film, but it seems like it's on the line of A Walk In The Clouds, which has nestled into a very comfortable 6.7 user rating.

reply

Yeah, that's a good comparison, as is "The Horse Whisperer," although it's the lesser movie because its original edit by director Billy Bob Thornton was cut down from over 3 hours to just under 2 hours. People who saw the longer version have called it a masterpiece, but producer Weinstein insisted cutting it down. As such, there are holes in the story and you have to connect the dots, but it's still worth catching if you like these kinds of artistic outdoor Dramas/Westerns.

One thing I like about it is that the story's unpredictable. You think it's going the route of a pleasant, romantic Western in modern times (1949-1950 specifically) and then it takes an unexpected turn.

reply

Hmm, really?

Now I'm intrigued.

I may add it to my watchlist. Thanks for the suggestion.
