There's an old cowboy superstition that placing your hat on a bed can bring you at best bad luck, or at worst, death. When John Grady, Lacy and Blevins stopped off at the little Mexican village for a drink of sidra (cider), Blevins briefly laid his hat on the Mexican woman's bed, foreshadowing his later fate. One of many really nice subtle touches that makes this movie special.
